24120 2001-11-10 05:05:00 Hi,

Can I connect two PC's temporarily for a file sharing exercise with out removing the cases? Ie, I want to access the hard drive of another pc without removing it, or installing new hardware. Is this possible, if yes brief instructions as to how would be appreciated.

Cheers

24121 2001-11-10 07:28:00 Depends which OS you are using, assuming you are using ME or W98 go start>settings>control panel>add remove programs>windows setup>communications and put a tick beside direct cable connection. You will probably need your OS cd rom. You can now use a laplink cable (parallel cable with double ends, Dick Smith should have one approx $20.00) or a serial cable to access the computers. You will need to enable sharing on each computers drive.
Go to Windows help and type 'direct cable connection' in the search box and it will probably explain it better than I have.
If you want go to google or zdnet etc and search for a free file transfer program which often makes the job a little easier.

Or go here for an excellent article.

24122 2001-11-10 10:10:00 As well as BC's comments. It will work with 95 as well. Under Control Panel/Network / Identity make sure both computers have the same workgroup name. You don't need any extra software all you need to do is in Explorer go to Tools/Map Network drive and you will be able to access the drive like one of the local one's. Guest (0)
24123 2001-11-10 10:43:00 BC's suggestions are correct and sound but willtake a Year of Sundays to complete if your transfering a reasonable chunck of data..If this is a regular thing prehaps the installation of a network card will ease the time restaint to a month of sundays. They cost a few bucks more but if spped a factor ots the next step up..

24124 2001-11-10 14:35:00 what i use is a free program called PC Linker 3. this is very easy to use you can view both drives, transfer to or from either machine, and specify the locations as well.
I highlt recomend this for fast transfers of large or small files.
the only downfall is that its a trial prog but there is a way around that :)

24125 2001-11-11 03:14:00 Thanks, I will give it a go. What sort of transfer speeds should I expect? I have a feeling that they will be too slow for what i need.

Cheers
