24093 2001-11-10 04:04:00 I seem to have a problem with my Acer 8x cdrw with buffer underrun. I presume that it is pulling data off the HD faster than the HD can supply it. With RAM so cheap, I was considering setting up a RAM drive and using that to feed the CD writer. Does anyone know how to do this in W982E? Is it a feasible idea even? I haven't used a RAMdrive since the old 8-bit Atari days! Guest (0)
24094 2001-11-10 04:34:00 It isnt a problem of pulling data off your hard drive faster than your hard drive can handle it.

The way a CD-R burns a CD, requires a constant stream of data, this data is read off the HD, stored in a buffer and then read from the buffer to be burnt to the CD. The purpose of the buffer is to smooth out fluctuations in the HD read speads.

A buffer underrun occurs when your CD-R software tries to read data from the buffer to burn, but the buffer is empty.

Im not sure of the exact settings, but you can alter the VCache settings in the system.ini for better performance, or alternatively try burning at a slower speed.

A RAM drive is effectively the way a CD-R operates anyhow, data read from HD, stored in a RAM buffer and then burnt to CD, increasing the ammount of RAM will help, so will shutting down non-essential applications before burning, and running a RAM cleaner before burning.

24095 2001-11-10 04:38:00 there are free ramdrive programs around but i doubt that would help.

what is your system?
what cpu? how much ram? what hardrive? which burning program? model number of burner? has this proplem just started? or is this a new burner that has been put in. how is the cdburner connected(secondary slave/master)? any other drives connected? is dma enabled?

24096 2001-11-10 05:35:00 Hardware:
PC Chips m/board model M741LMRT (integrated 8 Mb AGP graphics, sound, modem, LAN) Slot 1 PIII 550 CPU 3 x 128Mb SD133 RAM Seagate 20 Gb 5400rpm HD Acer 8x4x32 CDRW IDE Zip 100 drive Panasonic 52x CD ROM reader;
Software:
Win98se
PCCillin2000 AV
Writer software:Adaptec le version.
I had the same trouble with previous writer (HP 2w x1rw x24r). I also had this problem (though not so common) using Nero V5, but this won't work with my new writer(version came with an older writer).
I always turn the AV off and find that writing an image to a 2 gb partition on my drive that I reserve just for this, then defraging the partition, usually results in a good burn at 4x, but not if there are a lot of small files being written. This whole process is extremely time consuming though. I never had this problem with my old writer (the HP 2224) in my old PC (P200mmx with 32 Mb RAM!)so upgrading wasn't so smart really!

24098 2001-11-10 22:29:00 Hello,
I have 98se and was also suffering from buffer underrun, I increased the RAM from 64 to 256 but still it underun. Apparently 98se continues to use either swap or cache files, before using available RAM. I stopped the problem by turning off all applications that are running and use mem-turbo to alter the cache settings. hope this helps,
Bob

24099 2001-11-12 14:05:00 I still have my atari 800xl in a box somewhere those were the days of WACE in the old church by the beehive we used to laugh at the IBM XTs that cost thousands and didnt even have a color dispaly or sprites or decent sound. Any way back to your problem try cacheman its free and if that fails contact me I have nero burner on disk some where though I personally find cd creator 5 easier to use contact me at

24100 2001-11-12 14:18:00 Ray try rebooting prior to a burn and disable as many of the start up programs as you can it could be windows is leaking memory thru one or more of your applications.
128 megs should be enough I just went up to 768 megs. as a stick of 256 ram only costs about $70 these days on trademe.co.nz.
Also try turning off DMA for the burner, it might pay to get rid of the cd rom as well to see if that helps. next PC you buy dont go for onboard graphics and sound that is a sure way of crippling your cpu for important tasks like burning and playing 3D games .
