| 24047 | 2001-11-09 09:32:00 | Hello, I am having so many problems with my 56k external Dynalink modem (either Paradise is not as good as it once was or the modem just doesn't like W2K). Anyway, I am thinking of replacing it with a SwannSmart II. Does anyone know if they are as good as the company claims? If I buy one, there is also the issue of the new V92 standard. Any ideas how far away it is? The SwannSmart II is not upgradable to the new standard though they say it will still work fine. Conveniently, the Paradise support staff ignored my question about the new standard. Any opinions are welcome. |

| 24050 | 2001-11-09 23:40:00 | My modem is a serial one. A few weeks back, Dynalink replaced it because they thought it was a bit 'flakey'. One of their techs went through remving all instances of the old driver - nothing I hadn't already done but they insisted on doing it again. When the problems continued, they more or less said they doubted it was the modem. I have done a clean install of W2K, had my phone line tested (a dedicated one with no other device sharing it) and tried connecting at slower speeds. Nothing resolved the problems - connections that stop sending or recieving data and sometimes disconnections. I tried a US Robotics external serial moedm - not a single problem. I then tried the Dynalink modem on my other PC - again no problems. I can only conclude that Dynalink modems are not as good as they once were or perhaps their W2K driver is not a good one. Put simply, this modem just won't behave under W2K and I have done everything possible to resolve it. Hence my desire to ditch it in favour of one that will work. US Robotics are too expensive though. So has anyone tried a SwannSmart II? How far away is the new V92 standard? |

| 24051 | 2001-11-09 23:59:00 | I would not recommend using swann products. Although their products appear to be OK their tech support and driver back up is pathetic to say the least. Have a look on their website and see how many products have curent drivers released. I had one of their cameras, the 98 drivers would not work with ME and it was months before they released ME drivers, the situation appears to be no better for Win XP. Drivers and support are just as important as the product quality. Whatever modem you choose to go with see what support they are going to provide for current and future operating systems or standards. Read this, it is a copy of a response I received from Swann regarding my camera. Hi there, Thanks for your mail, in regards to your query please note we are always searching for better drivers, when we find some we always release them on our website, so keep a lookout on our website for further updates.
