24308 2001-11-13 02:07:00 Two or three days ago I saw where someone advised emptying the temp folder(not the one in the Windows folder)to solve a problem. I renamed mine to see what would happen and two of my favorite programs quit working! Undoing the rename got them going again, so I know that the folder is needed. Guest (0)
24309 2001-11-13 02:31:00 What programs did you lose? They shouldn't be permanently residing in your temp folder, maybe you unzipped the program's main executable there and need to move it to its own folder.

You should be able to delete the contents of your temp folder with no ill effects.

24310 2001-11-13 04:13:00 Emptying and deleting the temp folder are two entirely different things. It is normally safe to delete the contents of the temp folder as long as no applications are running, but renaming/deleting it probably isn't a good idea.

I'm only guessing but maybe your programs need to hold files in it temporarily while they are running? After you finish running the programs, they could be deleting their files in there automatically.

Or maybe it is like Gary says and you have program files that shouldn't be in there.

24311 2001-11-13 05:57:00 The folder is needed. The contents may not be. A lot of programmes need somewhere to use as workspace. If the programme crashes (or is badly written) files can be left in the temp folder, using up a lot of disk space.
If the disk fills up, the system stops working.
The folders are called 'Temp' because that is their function: temporary storage. Problems come when you delete 'temp' files which are still being used by an active programme. That is why you should not clear out the Windows Temp folder while working: you could zap the Windows workspace (some might say that is a good idea). Use Safe Mode to do that.
