24216 2001-11-12 01:04:00 I would like to build a web page but I don't know what I should use. Would a WYSIWYG page builder be better than doing it by code? Would I get a better page by doing it using a WYSIWYG program since I am young? Guest (0)
24217 2001-11-12 02:24:00 It all depends really, do you have a good knowledge of HTML? A good way is to do it by code and do the tricky stuff like tables in a WYSIWYG.

Good Luck, JM

24218 2001-11-12 02:31:00 Personally, I do all of my stuff in plain vanilla notepad.

Once you get your head around the way you have to set tables out, its actually really easy to do it in Notepad.

Unless you can afford/find a decent WYSIWYG editor like dreamweaver or frontpage 2001, I would just do it all by hand, its pretty easy to pick up and there are HEAPS of guides out there.

24220 2001-11-12 10:44:00 Sorry JM but I think codling tables must be the easiest thing to do in HTML The tidy.exe is a good program to list your code errors, I have made a batch file (if you would like it) to right-click any HTML file from any directory in the hard drive and ?send-to? the ?tidy.exe? file via ?run_tidy.bat?, it gives you
And a old copy with numbered lines,
a text file of errors,
A copy of a new file with errors fixed,
(be careful as sometimes it fixes up thing wrong, it is best to fix up your original yourself)

too save you time I have listed run_tidy.bat below

run_tidy.bat
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
find /v /n '' %1 > %1_num.txt
copy %1 '%1_newver.htm'
tidy.exe -config config.txt -f %1_notes.txt -modify '%1_newver.htm'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

or you could download HTML-kit from www.chami.com

24222 2001-11-13 05:06:00 Hey Brendan, teaching yourself is the way to go. It's really easy once you get started and there are some terrific HTML and tables tutorials out there on the web. Also, check out your library (or bookshop), they should have some great books to get you started. A good one is 'HTML4 & XHTML1 Visually' or something like that. Like the title suggests, it is a visual tutorial with how-to instructions on every page as you go. Excellent book.

You can do your code in Notepad but a free HTML editing program will make it easier. My favourites are Evrsoft's '1st Page 2000' and 'Arachnophilia'. Do a search in Google for them.

Have fun!!
