24515 2001-11-14 11:29:00 hi evry1

i want to put together a pc system that will be used to capture video eg camcorder stuff (8mm, vhsc, digital8mm etc) and VHS tape.. i guess im lookin firstly at say a

P4 cpu maybe 1.4 ghz
512 mb ram (ddr)?
appropriate motherboard to put the above on
60 gig drive

but im not sure about the video card and a video capture card

can u get a cheap DV and rca input video capture card? ive been told that cards with both rca and DV (firewire are xpensive) ..so if i got a DV capture card..then how would i capture video frm vhs tape?.. would i have to get a tv capture card that have tv in/out.?

or are there video cards that have a video in/out.? (so i can capture vhs tape etc via rca's)

please help!!!! im budgeting for $3500-4000 tops for a really good system and thats with no monitor, keyboard, mouse, software.

any suggestions for a really good system let me know an ideal setup and list the components urd have.
some pc shop people say p4 is needed..cos AMD chip will miss frames..then go somewhere else and they same AMD chip will work sweet.. sheesh!!! evry pc shop i go to and i mean EVERY shop has a differing opinion about a decent video capture system..so hit me up with what urd put in my system!!!!!

thanks

24516 2001-11-14 11:58:00 ok my two cents worth ;-)

video capture and editing is one of the hardest things to do on a pc.

at least you have a reasonable budget.

first thing- software. look at what editing progs you have or are going to use as video capture cards can be software specific ie some cards will not work with your software. also the operating system, as some cards won't work with certain os's.

video takes up huge amount of space. big hard drives, even raid if you can aford it. ram, only one thing to say, you cannot get big enough;-) 512meg is small.

cpu- i havn't heard about amd cpus dropping frames. i would check to see what cpu runs the fastest with your software. if the software is optomised for a p4 then get a p4. otherwise get an amdXP as they are cheaper and faster.

also a cd burner as its sweet to burn your movie to vcd to play in your dvd player.

also need to look at how are you going to do backup copies.
trying to back up 50gig of movies is a pain. if you are going to be doing seriously large amounts of movies concider a raid setup.

24517 2001-11-14 12:47:00 okay let me add to my first msg by adding..what software and video cards do u recommend for my system.and id be running windows 98 SE..thnx tweake'e but a lotta pc shop people say 512mb ram ddr is enough for video capture..but im still wanna base my system round my original wants..which was

p4 1.4/6/8 ghz cpu
512 (or more) ddr ram
60 - 80 gig drive

but suggest to me what software and video cards id get..i wanna capture both DV (firewire) and analogue video via RCA's and prolly use win 98 SE OS..

help help helppppzzz

suggest a system for me based on the above..so i can compare with others goin ..as i sedz..im lookin at spendin 3500 to 4000

24518 2001-11-14 18:45:00 well, how much video are you actually wanting to capture at any one time? eg a movie of 2 hours? or a video clip of 5-10 minutes... Guest (0)
24519 2001-11-14 22:46:00 dont know much about the subject but the link below had two articles on building the type of system you are talking about also, had a article on a matrix RT2500 card.
www4.tomshardware.com

at the least its interesting reading.

24520 2001-11-14 23:26:00 take a look at www.pinnaclesys.com

the other option is an all-in-one card such as an ATI but i don't think they have firewire ports.

ram wise- video will use heaps. sure you can do video editing with 128meg but 1gig is a whole lot faster.

cpu wise a p4 1.4 is slow. look at a 1.8 at least.

sorry i can't suggest a system most i do are custom made exspecialy high end machines that require max performance.

24521 2001-11-15 03:05:00 Take a look at this months Australian PC User magazine - avail in Whitcoulls etc. It has 20 page guide to digital video including recommending hardware and software, and also a free CD with resource kit. Guest (0)
