24399 2001-11-13 09:35:00 We run Windows 98 on a PC Direct Discovery 690SE. It is a Pentium II, 267MHz chip with 32MB RAM. I want to increase the RAM to the maximum (128/256 would be ideal).
Where can I find out
(a) what the maximum is ?
(b) what is the type that I need ? and
(c) what is the best/good brand of RAM ?
I have tried gateway and intel but no joy. Can anyone else help ? Thanks if you can.

24400 2001-11-13 09:49:00 You will need to get the manual for your motheboard.

It was probably supplied with the computer, otherwise you could run a program like SiSoft Sandra which may tell you. Or you could open it up and have a look.

24401 2001-11-13 09:50:00 Hi, ideally you would look in the manual for the motherboard. Have a look through any documentation you've got for the motherboard or the whole computer.

Good Luck, JM

24402 2001-11-13 11:41:00 Hi Gary, I too have a PC Direct Discovery 690. It is a Pentium II, 233MHz chip with 32MB RAM .I have just today installed 1 x 256mb pc133 sdram module with no problems.
You will need to take the lid off & have a look on the motherboard for a name or model number as there are no manuals at the former PC direct web site.
My Discovery 690 motherboard has MS-6117 stamped on it,perhaps yours is the same?If so it will support up to a total of 512mb of sdram & 256mb ram in 1 slot.
I purchased my 256mb from computer-link in wellington for about $65 inclusive.

Hope this helps
Cheers Steve

24405 2001-11-16 22:21:00 Steve, just wanted to say thanks: knowing that we had simialr computrs gave me the confidence togo ahead ! I actually found my motherboard book (see above). My book says the max I can go to is 256MB which I have done via two x 128MB. The guy in Quayside said sometimes the computer can feel lost at boot up whith so much RAM (ie if I had one stick of 256MB). Also he said that their wholesaler had just doubled the RAM price ... is this the start of a trend ?? I hope so cos for once I got something at the best price ! The only problem now is loss of sound ... any ideas ? All my leads are correct, the s/w loads ??? did you have any problem like this ?? Thanks again. I wondered if you felt OK about keeping in touch: you are the only other 690 i have found ! Guest (0)
