24626 2001-11-16 03:33:00 I have a old PII 233 with a 66mhz bus and ram speed. Is it possible to put the latest RAM (133mhz) in my computer or I am left stuck with the choice of expensive 66mhz ram or an upgrade.
cheers

24627 2001-11-16 03:57:00 Hello Cameron,

It depends on your motherboard, some will some won't, best suggestion is to take it along to your local PC shop and get them to try some PC-133 MHz (most don't charge anyhing for fitting ram,so if it does'nt work you should'nt have to pay anything)I have found that more will accept the new stuff than will not.

24628 2001-11-16 10:09:00 From the book on my motherboard I thought 133 would not work. It said it would only accept 2/32mb @ 66. Installed 2/128mb @ 133 and it worked perfectly so it is worth the try. Guest (0)
24629 2001-11-16 10:51:00 Hi, I have put PC-133 into a system running @ 66mhz... no problems. What happens when you put faster ram into an older system is it will run at Cas 1/2/3 with a different speed. Any modern ram module will step down to a lower speed in theory, I have not known it not to work. Guest (0)
24630 2001-11-16 22:09:00 Hi Cameron - I had the same question this time on Monday (we have Pent II/267 chip) and I wanted to increase the RAM from 32MB to the most. Looked at my motherboard book and it said the max was 256MB so ... I bit the bullet and bought it yesterday and intstalled today ... and it works. I have heard the same as one fof the other replies: the 133 will drop down to a slower speed and mine works fine so far. If you are going to buy RAM i'd buy it quickly: Quayside Computers (in Wgtn) told me their supplier had doubled the price that day ... I don't know if it is a nationwide trend but may pay to ask around. Good luck. I have had one problem: I have lost sound now so I will be making a posting myself ! Cheers, Gary Guest (0)
24631 2001-11-27 07:40:00 Mostly true. I saw a Compaq Presario 5020 (66MHz System) yesterday which would not work with PC133 RAM. It detected it but would not boot.
Have done lots of others with no problems tho
