24598 2001-11-15 19:02:00 I have a Win98 desktop and a Win2k Professional laptop. I want to be able to connect them with a UTP Cat5 cable.

The laptop has a NIC card I know works - I use it at the office.

I've recently installed a NIC in the desktop.

Problem: I can't figure out the correct settings to get the two computers to communicate. I'd appreciate advice.

Either do a search at the search bar at the top of this page as it has been discussed here plenty in the past or go to this site for good clear instructions with plenty of screen shots to help you.

The most important parts to get right are the same protocols on each machine and the names for each computer. I suggest going to the site above and you will be networked inside quarter of an hour. You can also download the site instructions and print them out which can be easier.

Please post back if you have trouble.

24600 2001-11-16 01:30:00 Hi John,
Go to your Network Properties, right click on Network Neighbourhood/ Properties and..
*Change the Primary Network Logon to Windows Logon.
*Click on File and Printer Shareing, tick both boxes in there.
*Click Add/ double click Protocol/ click Microsoft/ double click on IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol (on the right window)
*Click Add/ double click Protocol/ click Microsoft/ double click NetBEUI (as above & scroll down a tad)
*Click the Identifictation tab at the top and make sure the Workgroup is Workgroup.
Restart.
Thats the networked card's all sussed.

Now open My Computer and right click on your HD/HD's you want to share and click Shareing, in there make sure Shared As is ticked and Access Type is Read-Only.

Networking just the 2 computers you will need a Cat5 UTP 'crossover cable', If you want to network more than the 2 PC's your going to need a Hub or a Switch and use 'Straight UTP Cat5 cable' instead of a 'Crossover cable'.

Ken.
