24595 2001-11-15 11:00:00 I have just assembled a Celeron 566 system, of about 50/50 new and second hand parts. It has a TNT2 M64, 128MB Ram, Gigabyte Mainboard, 20Gb maxtor 5400rpm hard disk, 40X cdrom, floppy and all the rest... I have installed windows 98SE. It worked fine for about an hour, then crashed to a black screen and the hard disk and CDROM lights illuminated. Ctrl + Alt + Del had no effect, so I used hardware reset. After that it crashed once or twice more, always to a black screen with the disk drives active. This is cretainly not a windows problem as it does it in bios sometimes, and in dos. It is not a cdrom problem either, as it still does it when I remove the cdrom. I haven't tried removing the hard drive, as it is new and thus probalby not the fault. The Cdrom and HDD are both on ther primary IDE channel. The Motherboard and CPU are second hand, as is the cdrom. I have tried removing every component and putting them all back in again, and I am certain all are seated properly....any more ideas guys??? Guest (0)

You didn't mention what colour the computer is.

But seriously, what if you boot to the command prompt only and leave it a while? Try that. Maybe even run an old Dos app on it to see what happens.

Are the CD and HD using jumpered IDs for master and slave? If using cable select, try the jumper method.

Alternatively, power off the CD and see how it goes for a while.

It's all about eliminating the obvious. And of course a bit of colour matching.

Good luck, Robo.

24597 2001-11-16 02:57:00 Hi,

I've tried booting the command prompt only, and yes it crashes. Geoff Palmer recommended running scandisk's surface scan for a long period of time, which I tried, and it died... Powering off the CDROM had no effect as it still crahsed, but only the hard drive active (well duh!). I'll try your advice on the able select thing, I'm not sure how I set them up.

Thx for your help.
