| 24566 | 2001-11-15 05:01:00 | Hi, Have a computer that is feeling its age approx 3 years, it about ...doesn't want to join in our activities. (sorry don't know what make etc its, its a clone, runs Win 95, has a modem but not connected to the internet, Left it running, had been working fine, came back an hour later, screen (but screen black) and tower power lights on, but no light on keyboard. Pushed power plug off. Next day pushed plug to start, monitor came on (black screen again), no keyboard light, HDD ran for a few seconds and then nothing, not even a Windows opening noise that it was pleased to see me. The only thing I have done is check for any loose plugs. I just don't know where to start. Any help would be appreciated Thanks Heather |

You need to be specific explaining what it does and we shall try, already it doesn't sound good but it may be really simple. |

Try using the same monitor and cable with another computer that is working, if it still doesnt work, then theres part of the problem right there. Once you are sure you are working with a functioning monitor, turn the computer on again and listen. If the tower light comes on, chances are the power supply is still working, however if all else fails its something you can have checked out. When you turn the computer on, can you hear the HDD powering up, if you dont recognise the sound, its a low pitched whine as the disk starts spinning, also listen for the tell tale 'chug' of a disk write. If you hear no sounds, then it is quite possible your HDD has died, to be sure, take it to a knowledgable friend and try it in their machine. The other possibility that comes to mind is your CPU may have died. Usually on bootup, you should recieve either one single PC speaker BEEP, or a set of BEEPS. The single beep tells you that the CPU has all it needs to try to start working, the set of BEEPS gives you a specific indicator of what is wrong. Listen for these beeps, if there is one single beep, then CPU is fine... memory is working etc.. if there is a string of BEEPS, make a note of the pattern and post it here - I cant remember the codes but Im sure someone can. Let us know how you get on with all this, and whether this solves the problem. |
