24782 2001-11-17 22:51:00 If a picture (say a .gif)is inserted in the body of an email message(Not as an attachment) can this carry a virus and additionally when Outlook Express is configured to 'Preview Message 'would an infection affect the PC if preview displays the picture but the message has not been opened by the user? No, I wouldn't think so. I know you can't with 'dumb' data files (text and graphics, but not word documents and excel files). Absolutely certain with JPG and BMP, but GIFs are kind of different. They do animate, which makes me wonder if they have any smarts in them. My wife reckons the animated ones are just a couple of pics together that rotate and not much more than that, so I think they should be safe too.

To be certain that you are safe from viruses, always wear a condom while reading them.
