24760 2001-11-17 09:40:00 This describes the worst features of a corrupt version of Me that has resulted from upgrading to XP (which proved a little unstable, probably because I had left dome incompatible applications in the machine), then, on Microsoft's advice, 'winding back' to my former OS, Me.

The CD drive shows on MyComputer/Windows Explorer, but as soon as I insert a CD-ROM or CD-R, the system blue-screens.

Microsoft suggested that I make a rescue disk on a 'floppy,' boot up from that, and see if I could get to the CD drive in DOS to relaunch/repair Windows Me.

But I can't do that, because I have no control panel. The window comes up as a complete blank.

The knowledgeable man at The PC Company, which sold me the machinem says 'just bring up the DOS prompt and type 'sys a:' But no, I'm not allowed to do that; it tells me to prepare a bootable floppy properly, thru the control panel...

Another expert says 'nothing for it but to back up everything you need, fdisk/format and do a clean XP install.' I reply 'back up to what!? I now have no writable removable media!

ANY advice to get me out of this bind - preverably without losing a lot of data files and applications.

24761 2001-11-17 19:17:00 Can you reinstall the driver for the CD?

It sounds like you need to run Me setup again.

Or can you set the bios to boot from CD, and insert the ME cd in the drive and run setup again.

Or can you just download the startup floppy on the net, and boot up with that, to run setup again?

I'm not familiar with ME, but all these things could be done with 98.

24762 2001-11-17 23:56:00 I would reinstall the driver if I knew what brand the CD drive was (it has no visible brand name or mark, and seems to be about the only component of the system I don't have a driver disk or manual for.)
I will ask The PC Company (and probably receive the reply - 'we don't use those ones any more...' Like they did for my DirectCD software when I upgraded to XP!)

As for getting a Rescue disk on the web - thought of that, looked for it, can't find it. Can anyone tell me where I might find one.

Or even zip up the contents of their own Me rescue disk and email it to me! But that might be 'piracy' of course.

24763 2001-11-18 02:47:00 Steve, the mention that the PC blue screens upon inserting a cd and Ready through your previos posts incicats that the issue still is with the adaptec software that you tried to install.

What we are going to do first as we have no control panel to work with is go hunting for some files and run a reg clean once completing.

First we will try is to install the lastest version of the UDF reader..
download and install from www.roxio.com
Reboot, Any good. No ?

Ok so what files are we looking for..
cdr4vsd.sys
Cdr4vsd.vxd
Cdr4dll.dll
Cdral.dll
Cdrtc.dll

Rename the extensions of these files to *.old
Ie cdr4vsd.sys becomes cdr4vsd.old. Note you way not find all of these files.

Reboot after completing this.

No good. Go hunting for these files.

winaspi.dll
wnaspi32.dll
aspi32.sys
wowpost.exe
CD_READ.VXD
DRVWPPQT.VXD
DRVWQ117.VXD
DRVWCDB.VXD
SCSI1HLP.VXD
ATAPCHNG.VXD
TORISAN3.VXD
NECATAPI.VXD

Once again rename to *.old. Reboot.

Hopefully we would be fixed by now. IF not dang.

24764 2001-11-23 02:25:00 Try holding the Ctrl key down while powering up. It might( if it's like the one PC Company with ME I have seen) get you into the recovery code installed on the HD. You won't have a real MS WinME disk, will you: only the PC Company's version of it. But you should be able to get into it. And when you get it done, MAKE that Restart Floppy. Guest (0)
24765 2001-11-25 05:30:00 Thank you all, but the problem is now (largely) solved. A second, more helpful PC Company technician simply advised me to change the boot order, so the machine booted from the CD drive first, or second after the A: drive. 'Then reboot with our 'recovery' disk in the drive, and I reckon the drive will perform.'

It did, and PC Co. recovery seems to have set everything else to rights - tho' I had to mess about re-setting up the video driver and the cable internet connection (thank you Paradise - the only company involved that has a 24-hour help service).

There's still an occasional bit of flakiness, but I'm cleaning out the system of all the rubbish like adaptec remnants and backing up furiously to CDs.

I will then try a completely clean install of XP.
