24729 2001-11-17 05:15:00 Very recently it has started to take a very long time for my win2k computer to fully boot up. I cant really think what I have done to cause this. My computer has had its share of problems but this is especially frustrated as I just put 512 megs of ram in it. This is on top of the 128 megs allready in there, so with 640 megs I would think the boot up time would be relatively quick. I have tried it with the 128 meg stick taken out and it is still slow, far slower than with the 380 megs or whatever i had before i added the ram ( i was borrowing the 256 meg stick). Task manager shows 23 processese running when i start up but i dont know which ones i can saftely stop, and with 640 megs of ram i would think it would boot up much faster than it does. Nothing is more frustrating than investing alot of money into upgrading your computer and then have it worse off than when you began. Guest (0)
24730 2001-11-18 05:16:00 Hi Stuart,

the best way to improve W2K boot up times is with fast disk IO. With 256MB of RAM or greater the boot times will not vary much, but ATA100/66 vs ATA33 the times will be very different. I wouldn't worry as long as the boot times are under 90 seconds. You don't have a NIC configured to use DHCP do you? If so it may be waiting for an IP address which will cause a bit of lag.

24731 2001-11-18 19:57:00 Hi Stuart,

I too have found W2K to be quite slow loading up. I have reloaded the OS but the best I can get is between 2.5 and 3 minutes from turning the PC on, until I can use it (including Login). I do have a number of programs starting up i.e. SQL server, Personal Web Server, Zone Alarm, NAV etc so these will all add to the time I guess. One program I did uninstall and it did lessen the time quite considerably, was Real Player.

24732 2001-11-18 23:32:00 yeah, ill get rid of realplayer, it seems to be the only real useless program running in my system tray. What I was conserned about is the amount of processes i have running. If i check out my task manager it says i have 23 processes running after a clean restart, surely that is to many but i dont know which ones are important system processes and which ones are garbage like realcenter for example Guest (0)
24733 2001-11-19 03:29:00 Hi there,

On your network, you don't happen to use IPX/SPX do you? This adds about 22 seconds to your computers boot time. Antoher thing you might wanna do is go through 'Services' in 'Administrative Tools' and disable services in there that you don't actually use, you'll be suprised what kinda stuff pops up in there.
