24748 2001-11-17 08:26:00 Trying to decide which CD-RW to buy. Looking at 16/10/40 systems and want to know if anyone has a Plextor or Yamaha with those specs and what you think of them.

The Plextor is a bit cheaper and has burn-proof, a 2mb buffer and Nero V5 software.

The Yamaha has Yamaha 'waste proof' instead of burn-proof, an 8mb buffer and far more software 'goodies' - including Adaptec Easy CD Creator which has quite a few bad reviews.

Both drives have a number negative reviews from unhappy customers as well as plenty of happy ones.

I like the sound of the Yamaha's load of goodies but my inclination is to swing towards the Plextor for its burn-proof -- am I doing the right thing?? I am totally new to CD-RW and know nothing about them (yet...) so would appreciate some friendly advice regarding this, particularly from anyone who owns/has owned one of these.

Thanks!

24749 2001-11-17 10:05:00 Hi Susan, in the way of CDRW's Plextor is meant to be really good, but I do like the look of the Yamaha's. In the way of burn-proof vs waste-proof they will both be quite similar things, I can't imagine that waste proof has anything to do with not letting stoners use the cdrw. Have a look at www.cdmediaworld.com and www.cdrinfo.com they have a lot about cdrw's. Also the American PC World site at www.pcworld.com had reviews on cdrws alot.
And then ofcourse there are the general hardware sites, www.tomshardware.com www.arstechnica.com www.anandtech.com www.extremetech.com

Good Luck, JM.
PS. I see Ricoh has some 32x machines out now.

24751 2001-11-18 09:30:00 Thank you both for replying, and for the really helpful links. I've had a devil of a job finding good links to lots reviews -- enter CD-RW in Google and you'll be there for the rest of your life! And also for the links to online retailers in NZ as the stores don't carry much of a range in comparison.

The Ricoh model looks interesting and food for thought -- I'll find out if it is compatible with my system (currently not the fastest, unfortunately).

On with the research... :-)

24752 2001-11-19 19:10:00 I have been using the Ricoh MP7200A writer for a while now and have had no problems (very fast - if you can get the 20x CD's).
It uses 'Justlink' not 'Burnproof', it came with Nero 5.5 on CD and a small manual.
I purchased mine at 'OEM' computers in Manukau City.
I see on there web site that it is sell's for $258.00 + GST. www.oemcomputers.co.nz

Good luck
Dave

24753 2001-11-20 04:00:00 That's a great price David and I'm looking quite hard at that model now. Won't rush into it but will keep researching the whole business for perhaps another week before I take the plunge.

Anyway, thanks a million you guys, you're a great bunch!
