2012-06-22 08:49:00 | Hi All! First of tall I am new here so please bear with me..thanks! ... Anyway, here is my query. We use to gather in one place to play locally but not all the time we can gather up together. We are in a small island with only one adsl provider. I thought if we could use our adsl line to meet up local only to avoid using our internet bandwith because internet usage here is very expensive. Is there in any way I could setup a server in my place so other's(home) can connect and meet up on a game(local)? Again, without using internet bandwidth but just local. the reason for this was to avoid a huge internet bill's on each of us. Please kindly suggest any ideas...One of the tech said maybe thru vpn but I dont know how to do it and how it works...please help...thanks! | vimic16 (16820) | |

2012-06-22 10:36:00 | There are a few ISPs that have free local (Orcon?) If you can get people over then you could have 2 people plugged into the hub on the DSL router, then can't the games see each other? You can unplug the DSL and just use it as a hub?

2012-06-23 06:33:00 | Thanks!.. As far as i know it will still count on my usage too its just that one of the tech guys working in telecom told me that it should not be thru vpn its just that he doesn't know how, that's why it intrigues me and not so many people to ask around here...I have some ideas though but don't know if it will works, say like turning dns's off?or gateway's? So i don't have to go outside the island network..i don't know if i make sense :) | vimic16 (16820) | |
2012-06-23 07:00:00 | @inphinity thanks! but do you mind dumbing it down please? :) hehehe .... the national traffic... | vimic16 (16820) | |
2012-06-23 07:03:00 | @adslgeek Thanks! but we only had one isp here and I am trying to connect people from my place to their own place... | vimic16 (16820) | |
2012-06-23 09:32:00 | Ok so now I have a few more questions: 1) Which island? And why only 1 ISP? 2) Which game are you wanting to be the server for? 3) Why would you need a VPN? That is usually for a secure tunnel an end point? Not sure of why needing security?

2012-06-23 11:47:00 | @adslgeek answers ..... 1. Norfolk Island and actually two ISP but the other one is very slow like a snail :) norfolk telecom is a local provider the other one is private 2. Any game, say cod, CS, warcraft etc.. 3. Vpn was just an idea, i am not sure if that is right or there's another way of it...security isn't a big deal really...is there any other way you can suggest?? Again, i am trying to avoid internet usage...

2012-06-23 11:52:00 | Any connection from your house over ADSL uses bandwidth and will count on your bill, no way around it. Some ISPs do offer cheaper or free local traffic (just means in the same country) but you'd have to ask. | dugimodo (138) | |
