1283290 2012-06-21 21:59:00 Debating with myself as to whether an extra 4gb ram would come in handy. Specs in sig, yay or nay?

As for what I do, games, bit of doodling in SAI and gimp, have PS, fair bit of multi tasking. Task manager has 3gb cached as standard, though the usage meter sits around 1.55gb.

1283291 2012-06-21 22:31:00 Probably not. You're not going to want to muck around in Photoshop while you do your gaming.

I'd suggest either an SSD or beef up your graphics card for your next upgrade (Though you may need to look into a bigger PSU if you opt for a bigger graphics card too)

1283292 2012-06-21 22:40:00 4gb should be more than enough for gaming. But, you could always have a look at how much is being used when you're multi-tasking. Nick G (16709)
1283293 2012-06-21 22:49:00 The current GPU handles everything I play at the moment, I guess I can put some cash away for an SSD, since load times (at least in terms of windows) are relatively long at times.
I'd only go for something to stick the OS and a couple of other things on though, since those things are pretty damn expensive

1283294 2012-06-21 23:42:00 Is this a long startup time. If so, how many programs are set to run on startup? Nick G (16709)
1283295 2012-06-22 05:03:00 I do try to keep my startup tidy, and while it's a little slower than I'd ideally like it to be, I don't restart that often.

Just in case you can suggest anything, though, have a HJT log

1283296 2012-06-22 05:20:00 I'd say it depends how long you intend to keep it, RAM gets expensive once it's old techonology and it's pretty cheap to get right now. If 12 months down the track you discover you want more you may discover prices have increased. You probably won't benefit that much though, RAM demonstrates the Law of diminishing returns very well.

upgrading from;
1-2GB = huge improvement for almost everyone
2-4GB = big improvement for most people
4-8GB = small improvement (unless you're a power user), possibly unoticeable
8-12GB = slight improvement, probably not in practice
12GB upwards - no gain for most home users

1283297 2012-06-22 05:24:00 Well the last computer was from 2003, this one I got in 2009 when I started uni, and only because I acquired a decent amount of money and was able to get the OS free.

That is, exactly the reason I was considering it.

Also not sure what doing my project may bring, since I start that in about 4 weeks.

1283298 2012-06-22 05:28:00 Nope, can't really recommend and changes; not too many programs running on startup. Nice to see no toolbars  Nick G (16709)
1283299 2012-06-22 09:59:00 Win 7 64bit will gobble up and cache whatever you feed it, I've seen my one use 13Gb of its 16Gb after some heavy use. I think dugi sums it up though 4Gb is enough in most cases and you will probably see only a small gain going to 8Gb. Still, I doubt it will get much cheaper than it is at the moment, if you can get it, it would probably pay to. And your system will use it - you just might not notice it lol.

After thought - your graphics may share some system memory also (my old 550Ti 1Gb card also used 3Gb system memory for example) so having more will help that also (if your gfx card shares memory).
