1259870 2012-02-19 13:39:00 In 3 weeks time, me and mum are going shopping for a new tele for my birthday.

I want to know of some good ones.

She just want's to get me a cheapie sanyo from the Craphouse which i don't want, as warehouse stuff is normally cheap chinese stuff with crappy capacaters and backlights etc..

I'm looking on dicks site and they seem to have some good deals on sonys.

I intend to also hook the new tele up to my pc and use it as a monitor (through dvi if possible, though i might need a dvi to hdmi converter)

Any suggestions?

I Need's to be 32". My current extremely heavy bulky sony wega crt is 29".

Basically the features i'm looking for:

High def (1080 if possible but would settle for 720)
Be able to hook up my pc and use it as a display (probably can do this with a dvi to hdmi adapter for my card.)
built in freeview (i'm pretty sure they have to have that these days, due to the analogue getting cut off end of year)
Have a decent picture (give a good picture for freeview hd broadcasts, but also be able to view my many standard def dvd's decently)

I am willing to compromise on a few things if i really need to.

1259871 2012-02-19 16:28:00 Just take what she buys. It is her money after all. God when I was your age I was lucky if I got $2 spent on my birthday. You sound like a bit of a spoilt brat to me.

I'm not a spoilt brat. The thing is, i can get a better quality tv for not much more from dick smith. In fact a few of them are cheaper.

I'll be with her to pick one out in the next few weeks. I'm not spoilt, don't worry.

1259873 2012-02-19 17:36:00 Sanyo is a Japanese brand.

Why not do some research on all the prices, then you can show her the difference from a no name brand to a good one.

Or decide on which brand and model you want and then tell mum to wait till it comes on special somewhere.

And yes you are very lucky.

1259874 2012-02-19 17:47:00 There's not much in it, much like CRT's there are only a few manufacturers that actually make the screens and the rest just use those and add their own electronics.
All the name brands are fine but personally I'd go with Samsung, Sony, or Panasonic. That said my Dad has a 32" transonic and it's not that bad.

You think?
I own a 32" non HD LCD. It was the cheapest non-rubbish brand I could find at the time.

My son owns a 26" non-HD LCD.

If you are contributing to the TV, then make your choices, if you are not, shut up and leave it to your mum.

Leave the guy alone. Who cares whether he is spoilt or not. He asked for some advice and is getting shot down for being lucky enough to have a parent who wants to buy him a TV. Good on them and Good on him.

+1 here also, although not fond of transonics, all the ones I have seen had a quite grainy picture. As far as warehouse stuff goes, I see they are stocking a new brand (maybe not so new, I dont go there much) called Veon, the ones I saw had not a bad picture. Prices are reasonable also www.thewarehouse.co.nz . I know little about them (dont know who makes the screen) or know anyone who has one. Know someone who has a Veon bluray player though and has not had any problems. Maybe worth checking out further. Personally I prefer Samsung or Sony though.
