| 1259834 | 2012-02-18 23:39:00 | 120 MPs and 100 missing in action by the look of it! What a circus and when did singing get introduced to Parliament? HERE (www.sunlive.co.nz) :groan: |

| 1259836 | 2012-02-19 00:12:00 | I am not familiar with that bill, but I thought Peters wasn't into that sort of thing? Nor did I?? But what strikes me is on second look there looks more like 110 MPs missing. If legislation can be passed by only 11 in the house, we might as well stick to that number and the rest can go find a real job! |

It is common marae protocol. The conclusion of a speech finishes with a song (a waiata). The mana of the speaker is always enhanced if his speech is backed by a suitable song or chant. The entertainment, if you like, following the business, and also also serves as a thank you to those who listened to the speech. I don't have any issue at all with that, but then I like to think I'm relatively more tolerant than some on this forum. "But what strikes me is on second look there looks more like 110 MP’s missing." That's common practice in most parliaments or congressional bodies. In 1979, I had business with a US Congressman. Our meeting was in his office, where he kept his eye on the proceedings via CCTV. A light system alerted him if his presence was required by the Whip (or equivalent). At the time of my visit, there were only 80 on the floor (out of 420 I think), and there were about 50 members of the public in the gallery. I was treated to a tour by my host, and what amused me was we came across about 7 of his fellow congressman also conducting their own personal tours. (i.e. 80 on the floor, and 7 being tour guides) I wonder if the absence of our MPs is not at the back of our Speaker's mind when refusing the deaf MP's request for special services. How much time will she actually spend in the chamber? Outside the house, there are several sources of transcripts available to her, notably Hansard. Does she need the services of someone dedicated to transalation for the actual time she will spend in the house? |

Here's some suggestions: Speech by a disgraced MP: "Thank heaven for little girls/boys" Valedictory Speech: "I did it my way" Minister of Revenue: "I've got a little list" Anyone else want to add to this? :banana |

I have no problem here having access to those services, I have a deaf nephew and they do need the help, and anyway if it was a male MP or even a woe is me from Mana or Maori they would be given amazing levels of anything they wanted even if it's not needed they would get it. So what's the problem with giving one MP the tools she needs to do the job she was elected to do. People who diss the deaf really annoy me |
