1283419 2012-06-24 23:08:00 How big is this island? Just run CAT5 between the houses :p

Norfolk Island is a whole country contained in just 35 square kilometres.
Bit far really for cable.

1283420 2012-06-25 00:58:00 Wow, reading their pricing/plans is scary, reminds me of 1999 :/ I do note it lists some "local" services as free, you could check with your ISP if this includes traffic between yourself & another NI ADSL customer. inphinity (7274)
1283421 2012-06-25 07:16:00 I was actually surprised it wasn't worse (pricewise) as thinking about pricing up the minimum kit to run an ISP over there would be so expensive.

- and it seems like such a shame to have ADSL 2+ DSLAMs when they rate shape them down.

What is your synch rate? It's interesting to see if they rateshape at network or physical layer (would be better to limit DSL as would be more stable).

Hey one thing I noticed is they seem to zero rate NTP, unless they have stateful packet inspection (eg an Allotted box) you could just setup your game traffic on that port and it *might* get zero rated ;-)

1283422 2012-07-26 07:07:00 @adslgeek hello again! good news I was able to connect my modem to other modem but unfortunately I can't get the connected devices to talk to each other like the xbox... for pc do i have to create a vpn network under windows to join it to the vpn(modem)? and for xbox, how can i connect it to vpn if anyone has an idea on how to do it... thanks and hope to hear some ideas from you guys... vimic16 (16820)

1283424 2012-10-23 05:07:00 I see why your plans are expensive, your gateway is Satellite to the rest of the world, HUGE latency jump to get to Norfolk Is. Ask your ISP if they unmeter DSL to DSL traffic (national traffic) between customers. I don't think they do, their website looks like they only unmeter local which means only to their servers such as email and game server etc... not to another DSL customer (national). Some people don't realise there's a difference between national and local not just national and International, with some ISP's. As icow mentioned above, and if you can see your mates place (no hills or obstructions) you could use long range Wi-Fi gear like Ubiquiti NanoStation2 outdoor units about $159 plus extraordinary shipping each which gives low latency and a private link. Or you could use dialup modems (between two sites with a phone line) if local phone calls are free and unlimited. But dialup modems are limited to 33K and around 120ms latency between two of them. However, chances are your old lines will probably run like crap after an hour or two with noise caused by old line cards at the exchange. You should be able to complain and have them fix that if it should be a problem. If you use your expensive ADSL you need to map ports on the routers at each end to internal computers regardless of using a VPN or not (VPN's need them mapped too). Either way, if using dialup modems some neat trickery maybe needed such as setting up manual static routes on the PC's at each others house, so each PC can see the devices behind them on the LAN (know how to route traffic for LAN ip's, as dialup modem IP's in Windows will be different). Unfortunately Windows XP/7 Home etc... only allows one client connectino to it's internal VPN server. If you wanted a few users all to VPN in together to one place, you'd need something like a Windows server or Mikrotik RB750G (I run these) that can let multiple people VPN in to it, but they are complex for people that know nothing about networking to get up and running. If you could all see one mates particular place, you could all go get a Wi-Fi system setup at about $159+shipping each and set them up in point to multi-point bridging etc... Knowledge is free and time can fix half of that, it's the hardware that'll cost or Internet plan if using the Internet. kiwi_rock (16821)
