Sheds some light on it down the bottom of the page but I'm severely limited on what I can open from here so I can't link to the actual law.

I'm fairly certain though that when operated on a road a bicycle counts as a vehicle and although a licence isn't required ALL other road rules apply, including the breath alcohol limit. It's not specifically a Bicycle law, just part of the road rules. Certainly the police don't tend to breath test cyclists as a rule, but they could if they wanted to or it seemed warranted.

Bicycle does not count as a vehicle at all it is a cycle. The feld polizei can breath test cyclists as much as they want but they cant charge them unless they are disorderly.

1260823 2012-02-24 11:22:00 Nah I'd only had 1 can of Tui but being zero tolerance I was over the limit. Just waited an hour and went home, just to be safe. I didn't want to risk losing my licence. xyz823 (13649)
1260824 2012-02-25 03:27:00 Not sure about illegal but it certainly sounds like a bad idea, depending how plastered you are. Fifthdawn (9467)
1260825 2012-02-25 09:31:00 It is just a little difficult to imagine why a sober person would voluntarily get on a pushbike. Probably because it is much more pleasant than being stuck in a tin box in a traffic queue gary67 (56)

You can't be charged for riding drunk, but I'll bet they could find some related charge to pin on you if they wanted.

1260827 2012-02-25 19:28:00 Not sure about other places in NZ but the feld polizei in Western Auckland just drive past cyclists not wearing helmets and riding on the footpath. I guess along with not proffering DIC charges to cyclists they are told by High Command to just ignore the two wheeled numbnutz. prefect (6291)
