1283409 2012-06-23 12:14:00 @dugimodo yes, same country and the same gateway adsl network. I already asked and i was being told thru vpn its just that they doesn't know how. (not even sure if that was right)
When you said that if they allow local traffic did you mean that our isp should have a separate server for local network? Sorry i am not very good at this so pardon me for being dummy :-( anyway, i also asked that, they said f that's the case they have to propose first to the gov. If they can have that service here or not which is not easy and fast (as Service for leased circuit).

1283410 2012-06-23 13:01:00 VPN, if set up correctly, would let your friends computers act as if they were on the same LAN. Hence letting you plan LAN games over the Internet (ADSL). But as others have said this will still count towards your monthly bandwidth...

How big is this island? Just run CAT5 between the houses :p

answers:
1. Norfolk Island and actually there are two, one is our local provider which is Norfolk Telecom (Gov) and the other one is private which is slow as snail.
2. Any game I guess like, COD, CS, warcraft etc.
3. I am not so sure if vpn is the right idea, its just that it was suggested to me and when it comes to security it really doesn't matter.

1283414 2012-06-23 14:48:00 @dugimodo yep! where in the same country and I already asked that's why I was being told to setup a vpn but it just that they dont know how to do it over or behind adsl service...I am willing to setup a pc in my place as a server as long as it doesn't go thru my adsl bill ... anyway, this may sound dummy but pardon me I would like to ask about you said free local traffic...does this means our local exchange or provider has to setup a server for our local traffic? if it's so they are willing to do that it's just that they have to go to the process of proposing to the gov as a new service to the community (as leased circuit) that means another set of modem just meant for local traffic? ..please correct me if im wrong, thanks! vimic16 (16820)
1283415 2012-06-23 15:56:00 that's why I was being told to setup a vpn but <snip> as long as it doesn't go thru my adsl bill

Unfortunately the person who told you that was wrong, a VPN still passes through your DSL modem, so you're pretty much guaranteed to be charged.

Cause I live in NZ and Rugby is even more important than ADSL sometimes ;-)

In summary, it is some NZ ISPs that have local traffic which they zero bill for.

A VPN is still traffic so that's not going to help.

So your options are:
1) Pay the rate
2) Petition your ISP to introduce a free local traffic plan, though it is still infrastructure so would cost them.
3) Setup a wireless access point and/or start your own ISP, though with such a small market, it might be hard to make any money.
4) Get a place where you can all drive to (as only 34km wide should be fairly easy?) and then game on the local LAN.

I can't really think of any further options than this I am afraid.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!
