1260441 2012-02-21 21:10:00 I call them lacewings, but is that a different animal? Whatever, there are thousands of them in my garden too! They seem to mostly be on the orange blossom (Choysia)

LL

They are very different. Lacewings eat aphids and the like so are beneficial to the garden.

Pyrethrums are extracts from chrysanemums and would be safe to use with chooks. They are the active ingredient of some flysprays so are OK with animals.

Pyrethrum is a natural insecticide made from the dried flower heads of C. cinerariifolium and C. coccineum. It should be noted that though the pesticide is natural, it can still be harmful to humans.

Common symptoms from exposure to pyrethrum can include headache, nausea, vomiting, skin or eye irritation and inflammation. Additional symptoms in cases of ingestion can include numbing of the tongue and lips, convulsions, muscular fibrillation, respiratory issues and even death. (Reference 2)

Toxicity

Extension Toxicology Network reports that the possibility of toxicity is greatest in children, as their bodies have not developed enough to sufficiently break down pyrethrum. While absorption of pyrethrum topically is slow in adults, pyrethrum can pass through the lungs while breathing; at high doses, it can potentially damage the central nervous and immune systems

Pyrethrum is highly toxic to aquatic life including fish and tadpoles. In an insecticide fact sheet provided by Oregon State University's National Pesticide Information Center, pyrethrum is considered potentially toxic to birds and small mammals. Even at modest levels, pyrethrum is toxic to beneficial insects such has honeybees.

Just because something is "natural" don't think it's automatically safe.
Nightshade is a plant, belladonna is a plant, deathscap mushrooms are a plant (well a fungi actually).

I did not imply that it was safe just because it was natural. If it was deadly to common animals eg cats and dogs, it wouldn't be used in flysprays or would carry a warning. Of course, if you overdose with it, it would probably be harmful, like many chemicals. Just warn your kiddies not to eat the flowers... And of course it is toxic to bees, they are insects after all and that is what you are wanting to kill.

SKT174, you might want to investigate the use of a tobacco based solution made by soaking a cigarette in water.

1260445 2012-02-22 01:43:00 ...our garden is organic

I know what you meant but all gardens are organic

Simple solution to pests, remove all plant life from your section and concrete over it. Be sure to salt the ground as well just to be certain.
No more weeds or pests or pesky lawn mowing to deal with, garaunteed.

Actually your flyspray does have a warning.

Tobacco insecticide is also poisonous......LOL, most things are.

You could resort to the non-toxic squashing bugs with your fingers, but you''d never get them all.....

I don't have any lawn as it's non food producing and I would need a much bigger section to be able to fatten a lamb for slaughter, so the whole garden is put over to veg and fruit production

1260448 2012-02-22 08:55:00 Don't be fooled about pyrethrum sprays being natrual extracts of chrysanthemums, most of them are synthetic, and some versions are highly toxic. Though I would assume publically available ones would be in the lower toxicity range. I have used Neem oil and been happy with the result. Best sprayed in the evening which allows it to be absorbed by the plant. (Sunlight tends to break it down.) It screws the bugs up for about 2-3weeks before a repeat is needed. Had agreat tomatoe crop last year, good to see the plants look healthy right through the season. PPp (9511)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you need wood stakes and a hammer to deal with them!

I have tried different spays to no avail.
