1259660 2012-02-17 22:48:00 My 17 yr old girl, a student, moans about older folk working at our local supermarkets/department stores, whom she thinks are preventing part time work for youth. I don't seem them as old(er), only experienced, for training others. kahawai chaser (3545)

Old people are good to hire they dont pull sickies, whinge about the pay, are experienced seen it all before. The biggest thing is they can do is think for themselves and make decisions without rushing around like a headless chook. Like young people act like a retarded wombat as soon as the pressure goes on them. The old people should be able to grizzle about the youngsters taking their jobs but they dont.

A 17 year old thinks that anyone over 35 is old..

I agree and yet down here they seem to prefer employing the youth first as they pay them less

1259664 2012-02-18 11:39:00 How the hell is anyone supposed to have experience if they can't get a job?
I used to train my own staff fresh out of school, mostly "drop outs". That way they learned a trade and did it my way.

LOL .

My work has more younger people than older . Not teens, but mid-20's types . Who quite like to drink and party and so on .

When the new hours/days were announced, boos asked for suggestions and preferences .

I said if I worked both Sat and Sun, I'd like Fri off, and I'd prefer a set shift, rather than a changing one .

I got Weds - to St, 3 days off . (Longer hours though)

The rest b****ed and moaned and whinged about their weekends and how their drinking interferes with this sort of thing, so . . . they all got stuck on a roster . A stink one .

Now they say why did I get the good shift?

One, who started after me - has had maybe 3 full weeks, every other week he's been "sick" on Mondays, left early certain days, and lately resorted to takeing unpaid leave .

He brags he's never worked longer than 3 months anyway, and this is the record .

Pathetic .

Sons work hired another person to assist him . 1 was 55, 1 42, 1 pacific Islander and 1 young guy(mid 20's) .
Son voted for the 42 yr old (experience, attitude), they hired the young guy .

Are you still doing it though?

I ask because I used to do the same but retired quite a while ago before GST, Labour Laws, Safety Zealots and the like turned up. But I wouldn’t entertain the thought of employing up to 15 men these days under all the present BS. You can’t even sack anyone anymore without jumping through endless hoops.

A mate of mine who also employed staff closed down his business and retired a year or two ago. He reckoned all the paper work for ACC GST and other form filling prevented him from actually achieving anything himself. He now works for cash for old established clients and is part of the “Black Economy”. No tax, no staff, no form filling, life’s good. There’s thousands like him and successive governments have brought it on themselves with all the BS they have loaded onto the Employer. OK if you’re a large company with a accounting and HR section but hopeless for a one man band and a couple of apprentices.

So if the government want tradesmen to employ staff they are going to have to take an axe to all the overheads THEY have imposed on employers.
