1260027 2012-02-19 21:44:00 "New Zealand so fine. It they have probably the worst [sic]. Broadband I've ever encountered [sic]. Turns itself off slows to a crawl. Pathetic," he said.

That was followed with: "Rise up, Kiwis and demand better? You wouldn't allow crap roads with pot holes and single file."

Huh, that's the norm here mate.

An argument on the Campaign for Better Transport forum says otherwise ;)

1260031 2012-02-19 22:15:00 Arising from the OT, here is a matter of notable rarity. I find myself almost agreeing with Telecom.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts said the company was trying to understand the issues behind Fry's broadband problems.
"He's clearly unhappy with his experience."
Broadband in this country had improved "immeasurably" in recent years, as a result of investments made by Telecom.
If we switch "undetectably" with "immeasurably" for clarity, they have finally got one statement right.
Pity it is just one, and overwhelmingly likely to remain unique.

Agreed, its still slow though.

He probably was connecting through his motel/hotel, I have a client who travels throughout NZ and overseas (Singapore, Japan, US and UK mostly). Hes just about always ringing me from hotels and such asking what can he try, his broadband is slow or keeps dropping off, he cant get to sites he frequents tec. Many hotels/motels seem to throttle their broadband to the point it is useless which is frustrating..

1260033 2012-02-19 23:37:00 Given that just one single guest in a Hotel / Motel could take an entire months cap (40GB) in a single night, I would expect these businesses to have to install bandwidth limiting software, with quite tight limits on it.

If we didn't have the stinking caps on the plans, or such excessive data charges, then this problem would probably disappear.
They can 'improve' the network all they want, but until data charges shrink or disappear we won't be able to truely appreciate the difference.

I's like being given a Formula One track, and a F1 car, and only enough gass to go 40 metres. A great experience for a moment, followed by a month of disappointment waiting for more 'gas' for the next 40 metres of fun.

1260034 2012-02-19 23:59:00 Well it's obviously measurable so they got that wrong but otherwise I think our broadband is pretty good given the size of our country. It's not realistic or fair to compare us to the likes of England or the US in my opinion, we have a much more sparse population and a geographically challenging country. Add to that an ISP overseas can make more money in an average city that ours can in an entire country. We all want better broadband, myself included, and we don't want to pay the earth for it but it costs billions to actually upgrade the network and time to achieve. dugimodo (138)

Partly true,
NZ has a small population in a largish country. (same size as Japan and they have 90 million)
Singapore has 4 million in the size of lake Taupo.
I have been saying for years that we need 20 million people here.
That is just another reason why.

But all the luddites want to keep New Zealand "pleasant and easy to go to the beach etc".

Anyway, considering that we do pay more than other countries the money should have been there to build a better system, it was just that Vodafone were shipping millions off each year.
And telecom did not make any major investments.

Why are you living here then and not in the middle of Singapore, if you like highly dense populations so much?

Maybe that is the key word here... DENSE population.

You can go to Singapore and take your crappy ideas of overcrowded crap with you.
