25021	2001-11-20 18:41:00	My PC was running Windows XP successfully for about a month up until a few days ago when I started my PC as per normal but got the following error message: 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original set up CD rom. Select 'R' at the first screen to repair'. This suggested fix refers to the Recovery Console program on the CD, but I need help as to what command prompts)/command path I should use to correct the problem. Alternatively, if I do a clean install of Windows over the corrupted existing Windows, will this fix the existing Windows with my existing application files intact?	Guest (0)
25022	2001-11-21 01:59:00	Kevin You can't do a 'clean' install over the top of an existing installation. You can only do a reinstall. The good news is that reinstalling will leave your applications intact and should keep your configuration the same too. I don't know much about XP but perhaps somebody more familiar might be able to guide you on the Recovery Console issues. Is it asking for command line input or are you just anticipating that problem? 25023	2001-11-21 18:25:00	Thanks for responding Billy. The Recovery Console has a list of about 12 commands to use. The help function does give a brief explanation as to what each command does, but it doesn't explain what command to use for a specific problem, which is what I need assistance with. Any futher help from anyone would be most appreciated.	Guest (0)
