25239 2001-11-22 22:26:00 When upgrading to a new PC, what's a good way of transferring the data from my old PC to the new one. The old PC not having a CD writer nor connected to a network, and there's too much data to fit on a floppy. Guest (0)
25240 2001-11-22 22:52:00 hook up the old harddrive to the new machine. Guest (0)
25241 2001-11-22 23:43:00 A parallel transfer cable (about $30) would allow you to transfer data at 2Mb/min (using Direct Cable Connection provided with Windows). Guest (0)
25242 2001-11-23 00:06:00 no offence to tristan(nice to c u back again) but has anyone tranfered a whole hard drive via parrallel or serial cable? if so how long did it take? a day? two days? a couple of weeks?(that is two mega bit per miniute and not a typo as that works out at 4kB/sec, just under normall modem speed.)

why not use usb? anyone know where to buy the neccary cable/software.

25243 2001-11-23 04:40:00 It's a one-off. It doesn't matter if it takes a while.

You'll get a 'LapLink' cable for the parallel ports much cheaper than a USB. A 'Null-modem' cable for the serial ports will be cheaper still.

Get Zip or WinZip. Use it to compress each directory you want to copy over. DO NOT make one huge zip file of everything. Move all the zip files to one directory, if you made them in place.

Set up DCC on both machines, and copy the files. Walk away and do something else while it happens.

Make sure that all files have been copied OK, and unpack them.

Turn off the old computer.

Done.

25244 2001-11-23 08:10:00 Yes you can exploit USB's full power. The is no equivalent to a laplink or null modem cable for USB. The cable at Farmers probably just does the next best thing which would only allow one-way data flow like serial, hence the slower speed.

To get the full speed out of USB, buy, borrow, or rent (some places do) a USB hub, hook it up (no opening of the case required) and away you go.

25245 2001-11-25 22:54:00 Thanks for that Graham - and everyone else who replied.

It is a one-off transfer so the time it takes won't matter. I'll go with the parallel cable and DCC option - zipping the files first.
