25407 2001-11-24 06:26:00 This problem is apparent on both ASDL and Dial-up connections.

I'm surfing away quite happily then I click a link. Most times that results in some activity within the browser and the cursor changes to the arrow and hourglass 'I'm doing stuff' version. The progress bar indicates things are happening fine and within seconds the page loads (or whatever the link is intended to do).

However, several time during the session, a click on a link simply changes the cursor to the arrow/hourglass version and nothing happens for at least 30 seconds, possibly longer.

A look at the dial-up info in the systray shows no upload or download activity, nor is any activity visible in Zone Alarm...normally both these monitors indicate activity.

What's going on? I bought into the Jetstream service so I wouldn't have to wait for stuff while surfing. Having these pauses is nothing less than irritating and they occur with both dial-up and ADSL with no pattern in terms of site content or time of day.

For the record, I'm on Xtra, and the dial-up and ADSL seem to be running at full speed. Oh, and I'm using IE5x as my browser. I'm inclined to associate the problem with Internet Explorer, but fankly, I just don't know. Can anyone help?

Thanks a bunch,
Andy.

25408 2001-11-24 07:25:00 Hi there

As a recent ex-Xtra customer, this issue was my biggest bug bear. I contacted them many times over the problem and they insisted it was my PC or the phone lines, however using a friends ISP on my PC was better.

I found that I could kick start the transfer of data by clicking send/recieve in Outlook Express, but was weary of having to do so all the time.

I also found that it was taking up to 6 times to connect, and it would sit on 'verifying sign in details' forever before connecting.

Well I took the plunge and joined up with Paradise this week... and the difference is amazing. First off it connects instantly, the download speed on Morpheus is brilliant and pages load so much faster. The little green flashing lights in the system tray are not 'lazy' anymore.

Xtra said it was not their fault, something to think about...

25409 2001-11-24 08:25:00 Glad I'm not alone in this thing. I was beginning to think I was imagining it :-))

Seriously, if it's an Xtra issue, they should be duty bound to solve it. Maybe PC World could investigate whether it's a common complaint?

Thanks for your heads-up.

Cheers,
Andy.

25410 2001-11-24 17:43:00 Hi Andy,
Have just joined Xtra this week after 2 years with Paradise/Dialup - yes! - having the same outages with Xtra/ADSL that you are experiencing - but was getting dropped off Paradise all the time - so both have their disadvantages
Can you tell me what connection speeds you are getting on ADSL when you check the status icon in the toolbar - would be interested in what figure you are getting compared to mine
Thanks, Simon

Annoying, isn't it. Just had a forty-eight second wait for my internet email to display to retrieve your message. Sorta makes a mockery of the whole idea of high speed internet.

For the record, the upload speeds hover around 704k and the downloads seem to be steady around 3712k.

What you gettin'?

Cheers,
Andy.
