25254 2001-11-22 23:21:00 Hi - I began to do my first 'defrag' after 1 year of use.
(Celeron 466 & 10Gig HD Win.98) After about 1 hour it showed only 1% done.
Then went to 'Diskscan' & after 5 mins. dialogue box came up saying 'program restarted 10 times as windows writing to itself - continue?'
I went thru the normal pattern to get running ie - 'start\program\access\system tools\etc ' - & could not see any system adjustments noted that I had to make, or box to tick before running - - however something is not right -

what have I missed ??
any help please

Many thanks in anticipation

Jim

25255 2001-11-22 23:36:00 you have to make sure nothing is running apart from explorer and systray else defrag will restart (it will give up after 10 trys.)

so do a alt ctrl escape and close all programs listed except systray and explorer. also make sure you don't have your screen saver working. then try defraging again.

25256 2001-11-22 23:38:00 After a year! A bit more often would improve your machines performance. Depending on use, about once a fortnight to once a month would be better.
The problem is you have programs running in the background which are writing to the disk all the time and defrag stops and starts to take this into account.

Two ways of improving defrags performance.

1) Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete at the same time and a dialogue box will appear with all the programs running in the background, close all of them except for explorer and systray, then run defrag/scandisk etc and reboot when done.

2) Boot into safe mode which won't load all your drivers and background programs, then run defrag etc. (this is the better option) then reboot.

If you haven't defragged for a year then you probably haven't done a disk clean up either, so go to system tools and do one before you defrag and it will clean out all the junk you don't need. Or better still go to www.webroot.com and download the trial of window washer and you will be amazed at the amount of junk it will find and how much disk space you will get back.

25257 2001-11-22 23:40:00 Hi Jim,
I think you have to close EVERYTHING down, including your virus scanner etc.... I would recommend that you go to Google, and download a really excellent free program called 'POWER DEFRAG' Trust me, you won't have anymore probs, and it wizz thru your hard drive in an hour or shorter... 25258 2001-11-22 23:43:00 have a search through the forum as this is the most comman question possiable ;-)

instead of mucking around trying to close every program thats running, just boot into safe mode and run defrag from there. to boot into safe mode hold shift key down when booting up.

also setting a minimum swap file size helps. it depends on ram size but at least 100 to 200 meg will help stop the swap file from growing and shrinking while you defrag.

25259 2001-11-28 19:35:00 goto www powerdefrag .com and download, your problems will be solved. And defrag. on a regular basis. Guest (0)
