25630 2001-11-26 05:13:00 My OS is Windows ME and I have recently purchased and installed 2002 Norton AntiVirus program. However, I cannot download Live Updates. It tells me how many updates are available, downloads approx 32.o KBs out of 984.1 KBs, then tells me it cannot install. The booklet informs me that I must have 'Administrator access rights'. If this is my problem, what is it and what do I do? I have tried contacting Symantec, but the 0800 number answer phone tells me it will cost me money for help. That sux! I am totally new to computers and would appreciate any help. Jules Guest (0)
25631 2001-11-26 05:31:00 Since you are using Win ME the problem is unlikely to be associated 'Administrator access rights' since all users are granted these rights by default.

Try lookin up symantecs knowledge base. The link below may provide you with a few answers.

25632 2001-11-26 07:04:00 I have called symantics 0800 number on several occasions and have never been told that there is any charge. They have always been more than helpful. Are you sure you are going to the right place? If you are having problems with a new purchase you need to listen carefully to the options given. I think you need technical support. Try again. 25633 2001-11-26 08:20:00 Hello JJ,

Something very obvious, but is often overlooked by newcomers, are you connecting to the net ? before running liveupdate, if your not connected first, live update does exactly what you describe, it can be confusing if your not used to updating as it appears to be connecting to a server and actually gives you a file size, however of course it cannot go any further because you are not connected to the internet.

25634 2001-11-26 08:24:00 Hi Jules,

Go through a process of elimination. First off I'd try re-installing the software in question. Go to control panel, then double click add/remove programs, then select Norton antivirus and click add/remove. If that fails, try re-installing your modem drivers. This time you will need to go to 'system' under control panel, and expand the modem option, then remove the device. Windows ME should automatically detect and re-install it. If not, go to add new hardware and follow the instructions it gives you. It is possible you may also have a problem in the registry layout, due to the more than slightly random error message. Re-installing Norton is likely to fix this, but if not, see if there is a detials button on the error message, and if so, post what it says. There may also be a '?' in the top right hand corner of the error window, use that to get more info also...

Hope that helps.

25635 2001-11-26 09:13:00 before you go reinstalling anything just check that you are not blocking access to the server with a host file or pop up killer type program.

if you are trying to do multiple updates try just doing one at a time.

25636 2001-11-26 09:16:00 I'm not sure about 2002, but norton 2000 updates 3-4 things at once, but only running under 1 app, and it gets them one at a time... Is this the case for yours Jules? Guest (0)
25637 2001-11-26 10:30:00 Alan, if she were not connected it would not download 32k would it? Furthermore Norton antivirus automatically brings up your default connection window when you launch liveupdate. Guest (0)

25639 2001-11-27 10:14:00 Erin, tried the uninstalling carry-on as it seemed the simplest thing to do. It didnt work!!!! I am tearing my hear out and getting so frustrated as i thought it would be easier than all the rest of the suggestions, plus I am just a beginner and I am too scared to go in further. Sorry
