| 25543 | 2001-11-25 14:25:00 | I got 2 PIII computer with win2k installed. I am trying to network this 2 computers. I got a switch hub (SOHO Switch Ethernet Hub 100Base-TX/10Base-T) and 2 NIC (Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC) from Dick Smith Electronic. I got Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network, Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) installed. I also set the IP Manually for system#1 (192.168.10.1) and system#2 (192.168.10.2). Enter nothing at DNS server addresses. Basically i set up the network follow the instruction at 'World of Windows Networking (www.helmig.com)'. At the hub, the lights is on for 10/100 speed, Half/Full Duplex and Link/Active. It seemed that everything is looking good but when I tried to ping from System#1 to system#2 or the other way round, it got no reply. I tried to run the 'RSET8139.exe' in the installation disk that come with the NIC, it showed that no LAN Board found on my system. Anyone have any idea what i missed? Is that anything that i forgot to do or installed? By the way, I got Norton Personal Firewall installed on both computers. I tried to add the IP of the opposite computer in the Trusted zone but the network still not working. I also disabled the firewall on both computers and it make no different. Thanks in the advance first. YB |

DSE might have given you a crossover cable, which won't work with the hub. Or will work if you take the hub out. Also the two computers must have the same workgroup name, usually called just 'Workgroup' (though any name will work). You could also put the same subnet mask on both computers, try 255.255.255.0 |

| 25546 | 2001-11-26 04:16:00 | Thanks for the reply, KO nad Billy, I the reason i want to use Hub instead of peer to peer networking is because i will have more than 2 computers when I went back home at M'sia. Currently, i only got 2 computers ( One belong to my bro). So, it will be better for me to learn how to set up the networks using Hub. I did set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. The cables, I checked and i think they are Straight-through cables. I also tried to peer to peer them using those cables and win2k show the network is not connected. One thing that i should mensioned is I logging both computers using Administrator. Do you think i shouldn't do that? Should I logging using User account? YB |
