25561 2001-11-25 22:46:00 Hi, im having a problem with windows 2000, It was locking up on me when ever I played a game and I have tracked the error down to the fact that it has set my sound card, network card and video card all to irq 9 I want to change this but the option is greyed out in for all of the cards. I have tryed reinstalling and setting irq setting in the bios and still nothing

Any idea's !!!

25562 2001-11-25 23:43:00 hi Craig,

IRQ sharing is fine, and does not impair performance in any way. It would be better to resolve the cause of the problem rather than losing ACPI capability just to move IRQs. I would guess you are using a VIA chipset and a Nvidia graphics card. You may also be using a SBLive sound card. These 3 don't play together well. try adjusting the driving value on your AGP and try disabling delayed transaction on the PCI bus to aleviate this problem. Use the latest VIA/Nvidia/SBlive drivers and also try knocking your AGP back to 2x as well.

25563 2001-11-26 00:09:00 anon, please don't take this wrong, I would like to learn more about this.

I have always worked on the understanding that sharing an IRQ is the worst thing you could do on a computer.
Not being a very bright or inteligent person, only scoring a Wannabe in the nerd test, I always imagined that have 2 or more devices sharing the same IRQ would cause conflicts, ( those things that make the blue screen of death come up ).

Could you further my edumakation on this subject.
Regards K.O.

25564 2001-11-26 01:24:00 Well, PCI IRQ Sharing is supposed to allow devices and cards to share IRQ's without conflict, but...
Dont know about Win2000 does it have PCI sharing? Believe NT didnt.
You may also have a card plugged into PCI slot 1 next to AGP slot, if so then these two slots share an IRQ, and its best (as another posting recently said) to avoid using slot1.
If you do have a card in slot1, remove the driver for it, and then plug the card into another slot if you have one spare, and then let Windows re-detect.
I dont think it's a good idea to let your video card share IRQ with a SB sound card.

Lets see what the newly tested Nerds come up with.
