26052 2001-11-30 01:21:00 Never rains but it pours folks, gave up on the dead drive and took it to Computer Forensics to see if they can extract the last week of files that aren't on my backup.

The drive still spins up ok and doesn't make nasty graunchy noises so there's hope yet. I'll let you know how I get on.

Bought a new drive, came home switched on computer to start install and........... zip! It just sat there ticking at me. Was ok at shutdown last night so I guess the power supply gremlins got in overnight and had a party.

Them's the breaks. No answer needed, just felt like sharing my misery!

What kind of ticking?

26055 2001-11-30 08:22:00 Poor Billy! I just had to offer my condolences because I hope to hell it doesn't ever happen to me!! It would be as bad as having my right arm chopped off. I really hope it all comes right for you very soon. Guest (0)
26056 2001-11-30 10:32:00 Well, service from Computer Forensics is first class. Dropped the disk off at 11:00 am and by 4:00 pm I had a full report and the data recovery process was under way. The drive was deader than a dodo with only the platter motor operational.

Initial cost is $90 (incl) to examine & report which means that they have to have actually begun the data recovery process to know the condition of the disk and if the data is recoverable. I'm glad it was only 1.2GB and not an 80GB!!!

Final cost will depend on how much more work is required but if the recovery fails, there is no further charge.

I'll have the results on Monday so watch this space.

PC is still out unfortunately, will install a new PSU tomorrow and then try out my new 20GB hard drive.

26057 2001-12-01 02:41:00 While you wait to restore the system, it might be a good idea to check out your UPS -- run a few hundred watts of light bulbs, and measure the voltage. Just a precaution. Switch mode supplies still work on reduced volts, but they pull more current to compensate. This increase the stress on their components. Guest (0)
