| 26425 | 2001-12-03 23:35:00 | Am thinking of buying a new computer and would like some advice from experience. Using 98se at the moment and no problems, the new one offers XP installed. Would like to hear from someone who has done this and the for's and against it. Will the following work with XP, Nortons 2000,Iomega Zip, HP Scanjet4200. The horror stories scare me.. Advice please..Ron.. |

Also u can check other sites such as www.hp.com and www.iomega.com and others .... check them both like not just MS cos they are not consistent. MS may not say whereas hp says yes ... RC |

XP has some really useful features and some really funky ones, its just depends on your preferences, apart from a few minor setup glitches its performing fine and (touch wood) in almost a month not one crash or lockup or BSOD, fingers crossed. |

I have a deskjet 720c and its working fine on xp pro, i got xp with a new computer, i wouldnt know anything about updating it from 98 if you are going to. | mejobloggs (264) | ||
| 26430 | 2002-06-29 09:37:00 | Hi Ron I have moved over the years from (DOS 1.0,2.0,3.3,6.0,6.22,) Win 3.1,95,98,ME,XP Nothing comes close to XP, I would not go back. Stability is excellent. The only thing that wouldn't work was my HP3300c scanner, which has now had a driver released by HP and works fine. I was so impressed I upgraded my other PCs to XP, now they simply dont fall over. Networking was (almost) plug and play. If you are a gamer, check compatability of the games. |

| 26431 | 2002-06-29 09:37:00 | I have also had xp for about a month. Only 1 bsod but otherwise rock solid. If you are buying a new pc it will usually come with some antivirus that is compatible - may or may not be nortons. Not sure on iomega, but should work - I haven't brought the zip drive home from work since I loaded xp. Check the HP site for the scanner. I have 1 program that does not run on xp, so I still have 98 as well. | wotz (335) | ||
| 26432 | 2002-06-29 10:42:00 | I doubt you will have much trouble with a "New XP Loaded" computer as all its bits & pieces should be compatible If you are thinking of loading XP on top of Windows 98, definitely run an XP/W98 Compatibility programm. It will be on the XP cd you buy or look on the Net as suggested. If something is Not compatible then make it so before you Load XP on top. I Didn't & what a shambles, fortunately we downloaded C-drive in it's entirety onto a "Spare" drive. I lost a lot of files during the setup. I seriously considered dumping it & going back to W98. A friendly Techie, freely. gave his time to this old codger & sorted it out. It restores ones faith in human nature. Now I would definitely NOT go back to W98. XP does have some great stuff in it evenif it does run slow, mind you I only have 128 Ram, I suggest you get more. I hope I haven't made things worse for you? Sorry if I have. | 26434 | 2002-06-29 14:20:00 | Godfather - i would have to agree - nothing comes close to it, i use 3 diff. computers, the older one and laptop still have win 95 on(Believe it!!) I love xp and after having a few years break and not having a computer, getting xp as my first was the best move - ME as i mentioned in another thread sounds like a bit of a doosy and i would definately recommend xp to any newbies - would make things heaps easier for them! If you area gettting a whole new computer with xp installed then you should get the latest software that is compatible with it in the deal e.g anti-virus etc and check for the latest drivers for your scanner etc.. like godfather said - you won't look back ----- And i think you will appreciate what it has to offer after an older o.s - Gee hope i don't eat my words, nah the bugs are pretty sussed now!!! Go for it!!! p.s Norton A.V 2002 is compatible. |
