| 26417 | 2001-12-03 23:56:00 | Quite simple. It is an attribute used in archiving. The bit is set when the file is written to. An archive programme (or even a copying programme e.g. xcopy) *can* be set to archive only files with the bit set, and then turn off the bit. This means that archives can be 'incremental' -- backing up only files changed or created after the previous one. Of course, you do a cycle of a full atchive, then a week or month of daily incrementals. It was more important with small archive media, but even now, with 650MB on a CD, you need a few to archive a full 20GB disk. It gets worse if you have a farm of them. |
