26500 2001-12-04 09:19:00 Hi all

I have a Conexant 56k Voice/Fax modem which Linux Mandrake says is a winmodem (is it?) and therefore can't use.

I don't really want to have to get a new modem. Are there any other solutions?

Thanks
Paul

The following link from the Conexant FAQ page says that drivers for their modem for Linux will be available at the end of the year ... hold tight!!

26502 2001-12-04 22:26:00 I believe that just about all(if not all?) PCI modems are WinModems. While Linux drivers are becoming available for Winmodems, the quickest and easiest way to solve your problem is to buy an external serial port modem. They are very easy to set up under Linux. Guest (0)
26503 2001-12-05 04:20:00 The problem has been that WinModems use the CPU, and Windows code to do a lot of the work.

'Real modems' are self contained, and have been used on Unix and other computers for decades. The code is written.

To write driver code for the WinModems, the clever people need detailed information about the hardware, which many of the manufacturers refused to supply, or insisted on 'non-disclosure' agreements. The coders had done modem software which works, and why should they bother about Winmodems? There are more interesting things to do.

If the manufacturer Of Conexant have decided to cooperate, and provide their own software for Linux they will gain some extra sales.

But the attitude in the Linux community has been: 'Real modems work'.

It is a bit tricky fitting something like a software modem into the system, because accessing hardware inside the computer (I/O ports) has major security implications in a multiuser system. Especially if the device is attached to the outside world.

The HOWTO-Hardware document is very useful. When they warn about particular gear, it is because of bitter experience.

Look out for a cheap second-hand external modem. There must be a lot around, with many new computers coming with PCI internal ones.

You will probably find it more reliable than the first version of a driver for the WinModem.
