| 26598 | 2001-12-05 09:47:00 | Suddenly, 1. I cannot access windows(W98 S.E.) help file from Start,Help, but get the following message 'cannot open the file %systemroot%\help\windows.chm' 2. Cannot open help files -index and contents- ex Internet Explorer and Outlet Express ( each Version 6). just nothing happens with no message. Can run all three help files via Start, Run c:\windows\helpdesk\help\windows.chm- in the case of windows help or replace windows .chm with iexplore.chm for Internet explorer help a. Have I got a virus? - I use Computer Associates Inoculate personal edition and am religious about updates. b.Have I deleted something I shouldn't have? Again I leave files in the Recycle Bin for 10-14 days before finally emptying. This is the first time since my first IBM PC machine in 1984 that I have got into such trouble. I would be grateful for any help. I read PCWorld from cover to cover, have done for many years now, but don't recall this problem being discussed. Rex Patchell |

| 26599 | 2001-12-05 13:58:00 | Had a similar problem with windows ME,traced it to a freeware download called KILL, a hard drive cleaner. It deleted all of my help files while searching for temp.files!Have you perhaps used similar'cleaning'program recently?Thankfully I was using ME and could undo the damage using accesory,'system restore'. | Guest (0) | ||
| 26600 | 2001-12-05 23:10:00 | Thanks for the comments, Kevin jusr Kevin. My help files are not destroyed- I can still access them as decribed in my posting - its accessing them in the normal manner tbat has come unstuck. Not having ME i can't use the resore feature. No I have not used any such hard disk cleaner such as Kill. Indeed the name would deter me. What I have used lately is AdSubtract SE 1.64 which may have been the culprit Rex |
