My friend has a 486 that is not working properly... well not at all actually. When you boot it up the screen stays blank and the computer beeps about 4 or 5 times then stops. It is a different noise than when the RAM is not seated correctly. Can anyone help? |

Could be video card, check the card is firmly seated, and monitor cable as well. |

Make sure all the cables are connected properly, like the IDE cables and all the cards are correctly in there slots.
I had a similar problem the other day and found that the floppy drive was not connected. |

If you are lucky and can locate a motherboard manual (or your friend has one) you may find a section will describe what the beeps actually mean.... Good Luck. |

Tell us the exact number of beeps. And look inside the box and let us know the name of the BIOS maker. There will be one (probably) 28 pin package, 0.6' pin spacing (about thumb size), and it will be labelled something like '386/486 BIOS' or similar -- and the manufacturer's name -- there are various books which list the error beeps. |
