26732 2001-12-06 10:34:00 Just curious (bored)

The little boxes that show up when defragging that are white with the red box in the corner can't be moved. Why? What are they?

Is there a way to move them all to the beginning? Would that make everything work smoother? or would it be a waste of time?

26733 2001-12-06 11:27:00 They are clusters belonging to files that are in use, and files marked as 'system'.

If you run defrag in safemode there will be less of them as there are fewer programs open.

26734 2001-12-06 21:07:00 When we used to run Defrag in DOS (years ago) there were just a few, and they were things like command.com, msdos.sys, io.sys etc. that was always looked for in an exact position on the disk, so they were unmovable. When running defrag under Windows, some files are being used, so prefer not to be moved, and files like the swap file can't be moved either (I guess cause that's always in use too). Guest (0)
