1284862 2012-07-01 02:06:00 Hi , I have a heap of files on my ( now deceased ) computer that were done in Microsoft Publisher 97 -- cause it was there !

As noted , my computer has died , and I have just purchased a new one ; also , I have lost the original CD with MSPublisher97 on it . I have literally over 1000 files that are saved to back-up -- I was just going to get the latest MS suite with Office , Publisher , etc on it ( and almost certainly will ) , but I understand that it won't open these 'old' files ?

I don't think I have a program to turn these into PDF's or similar , and even if I did , as I can't open these older files , don't think I'd be able to do anything anyway . Any suggestions ? I've never seen MSPub97 for sale ( think it's illegal to resell these ? ) and scan't find my original CD .

Thanks

1284863 2012-07-01 03:54:00 I don't use publisher or it's godawful file format, but I am constantly asked by schools about this issue. My recommendation is http://www.k2pdf.com/

I haven't used it myself but I've had good feedback.

OpenOffice (openoffice.org) and LibreOffice (http:) have a powerful layout editor: Draw, that exports to PDF and will also edit PDFs and is a low learning curve simple DTP.
Or if you want a proper Desk Top Publishing Software I would recommend Scribus (http://www.scribus.net) for publishing, it's up there with InDesign, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't handle .pub files

There a commercial product PDF Convert (www.pdf-convert.com), don't know whether it works or not, they don't do a linux version. Obviously it costs.

I don't see why the new version of Office wouldn't be able to open the older files. If it can't, then MIcrosoft are pathetic.

The CDs can be resold, I just don't think anyone has any for sale any more. You'd probably find one eventually, but it probably wouldn't work on anything higher than Windows XP.

EDIT: You can always find on eBay:

It can't! One of hte many reasons why I now use open source at home and whenever I can at work.

1284866 2012-07-01 09:44:00 I have PUB 2002 and my brother has 2010. We swap files without a problem. I don't know if PUB97 files would be opened in the latest version, probably will as I can also open the old Exel97 files in Exel2010. Maybe Microsoft will tell you :-) mzee (3324)
1284867 2012-07-01 09:57:00 Got this from Microsoft Support.

"Publisher 2010 can open most files from 2000 on up. There was a security update some years ago that keep some legacy files from opening. If you have 2000 the older files can be opened and resaved. I have no problems opening 97 and 98 files with 2010."

1284868 2012-07-01 10:00:00 OK - I am basing my statement on taking a pile of home files from I think Publisher 98 to work to try and convert them - must have been about 2003 but none would open. johnd (85)
1284869 2012-07-01 10:07:00 Just opened a Publisher 97 doc in Publisher 2007. Quite why you'd still need support for a 15-year-old app is beyond me, though :P I could suggest you get the trial of Publisher 2010 and test to see if it opens your files... inphinity (7274)

Because the OP has 1000+ Pub97 files that he perhaps doesn't want to lose access to?
