2012-06-28 04:24:00 | Over the past months I have tried several times to upgrade from Windows XP SR2 to SR3. After a considerable time during which the up grade appears to go OK I get an error message . Unable to complete install of SR3. Install has been backed out. Windows may not run correctly. Very helpful as usual. However Windows does seem to run correctly. I have a legal copy of WinXP with license key etc. Over the years I have added more RAM and 2 x 80Gb HDDs and a new video card. I cant see any reason for this to stop the install. I am able to install other single up dates but not some programs such as MS Malicious software tool for instance. Does anyone have an idea why this is and how to fix it please. Cheers,

2012-06-28 05:35:00 | Im assuming you are trying to install XP SP3 (not SR3) ie just a service pack, not a install of WinXP SP3 over older Win. It wasnt an error about cleanup after install was it ?? Ive never seen your error, Ive installed many a SP3 . -disable the AV & any security suites -run a surface scan on the HD : chkdsk /r -re-download SP3 to the other HD, & run it from there -disable all the programs running in background, disable anything in the scheduler Could be Win is too corrupt. Wipe & reload may be the answer.

2012-06-28 06:24:00 | Oops, sorry, yes sp3 over winxp sp2 Not cleanup error, never got that far. No other progys running either in for ground or background at time of install. Surface scan ok. Win xp sp2 is not corrupt it runs perfectly at all times. Tried 3 downloads of sp3 from different sites VERY perplexing eh ?

2012-06-28 06:55:00 | Your download/install folder may be corrupted. One thing you can try is this; Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: net stop wuauserv once you get the message update service has stopped, go to C:\Windows locate and delete the SoftwareDistribution Folder ( if its not visible then go to folder options and click show hidden folders. Once deleted, reboot the computer - try the SP3 update again. The only negative thing about the above is you wont be able to uninstall any other previous windows updates if you want to.

Hi wainuitech, Well, that worked but what a mammoth job with all that MS bloatware. 3:20 to download a 320Mb file (dialup), 2:30 to install and then a further 2:00 for the final part of the install disk cleanup. But at least it's working. Many thanks, Phil. |

2012-06-30 01:18:00 | I have yet to hear of any advantage in adding SP3 to XP with SP2. | Peter H (220) | |

2012-07-02 06:39:00 | And some programs require SP3 e.g. MS Office 2010 | ChazTheGeek (16619) | |
