| 1283949 | 2012-06-26 04:29:00 | Hi, A few friends (not too good with computers) have asked me to have a look at their computers, which are running slow One is a Windows 7 Core i5 laptop Not sure what the other one is - could be XP or Win 7. I think one is running a paid Kapersky AV subscription - is this OK or should I get rid of that and put on MSE? Anyway - if you are a tech: what procedure do you go through when a client comes in with a problem like this? Guessing I'll just need to take a lot of junk off - but are there any tools which are worth using as well, eg CCcleaner/spybot/...? |

| 1283950 | 2012-06-26 04:47:00 | KAV is very good. Needs a descent PC spec though ANYTHING 'Internet Security" remove & install a plain ol AV (MSSE) Run Malwarebytes across them . Run 'Hijack this' . If teenagers have filled it up with crap: then good luck :-) Laptop CPU may be stuck in power save mode & stuck on 50% speed HD can go bad & run VERY slow too many programs may be running continously in the background msconfig-disable all startups , check speed & go from there What is slow?? seriously . What do they think is too slow (unless obvious) slow on games - get a gaming PC slow on email or internet- they make have a slow internet connection or bogged down by P2P & movie downloads?? slow to startup - be patient. Come back in 3 minutes slow in general- not enough RAM, too low spec PC, malware infection, hardware issues, crapulated with crapware  |

You can have a look at how many are running on startup in CCleaner, tools, startup Useful tools would be CCleaner, spybot, Malwarebytes, Rkill, Revo if he has a lot of junk programs that need removing. Install MSE, remove kasperky. run hijack this and post the log here, one of the resident techs will have a look at it. |
