1283780 2012-06-25 08:34:00 I have this really, really old laptop. Pentium 3, 32 gb hdd, 1/4 gb ram.
Yea

I'm trying to make it run linux, not bothering to dual boot or anything. Being a complete noob to linux, I'm having trouble finding a acceptable distro to download, acceptable being a fully fledged distro that will run on such an old pc. Preferably it would be a .exe in an iso, just as its so old it wouldn't boot from an iso the last time I tried it.

Any Ideas on a good distro plus download link?

Thanks

1283781 2012-06-25 08:42:00 Hey there, Surely the Ubuntu install should work?

I have installed it on some pretty crappy old machines, and they have run like a dream.

1283782 2012-06-25 09:16:00 I could only find an iso, and its so old it needs a .exe as the boot options aren't there. Nick G (16709)

An ISO you need to burn to a CD. Does it have a CD drive? If not you will want one on USB. .EXE is a Windows program. You can run an .exe in Linux but only with the help of Wine or similar.
I wouldn't even try to run Ubuntu on that. Some distros you could try are PCLinuxOS MiniMe, Damn Small Linux, Lubuntu, Puppy Linux, Tiny Core Linux.

1283784 2012-06-25 09:28:00 Yeah Ubuntu is probably too heavy for that thing. I would try Xubuntu/Lubuntu/Puppy. sahilcc7 (15483)
1283785 2012-06-25 09:31:00 I can't boot from usb, the bios doesn't have that option. Sigh.
I'll try lubuntu tomorrow, and let you know how I get on.

1283786 2012-06-25 09:51:00 Puppy or if you can still find it Damn small linux both are made for older hardware and have a tiny installed size gary67 (56)
1283787 2012-06-26 04:23:00 KDE3 runs very well on older hardware, it will be fine on that machine. Get an older version of a distro which still has KDE3 as the default desktop (slackware 12.2 for instance) - will be fine forrest44 (754)
1283788 2012-06-26 10:53:00 Rather than going for an older version IMO it is better to use a new distro with a light desktop.

1283789 2012-06-26 12:00:00 I would go with Lubuntu, it should run pretty well. Agent_24 (57)
