1283628 2012-06-24 01:30:00 Had Vista reinstalled. NOD32 Antivirus 5 seemed to be working but the Virus signature database can’t seem to run fully. It appears from the Vista reinstall date that Under Scheduler, Log maintenance, regular automatic and system scan have worked, but “Update Virus signature database” says “Update has not been run yet”. It has tried to run automatically going round and round and it’s now changed from orange to red. Under Home .”Maximum protection is not ensured” “Virus Signature is out of date”
After googling I realised that Windows Defender could be the problem as it would have been reactived by default on the Vista reinstall. So turned it off.

But on NOD when I select update and manually try to start “Update Virus signature database” nothing happens. Also just tried options “Smart scan” and “Frequently used” and both say failed to run scan. Anyone any idea??
I’ve left on Windows Firewall as I read that NOD32 Antivirus 5 doesn't have a firewall, but Eset Smart Security does, and I believe I have the former.:thanks

1283629 2012-06-24 04:20:00 Uninstall NOD using it's on removal tool.
Then reinstall it.

I'd ditch Windows Defender.

1283630 2012-06-24 04:26:00 Windows Defender comes automatically with Vista, which I have now stopped.
Nod has only just been reinstalled and appears hasn't worked fully since reinstall.
Shall have a look to see if "stopping" Defender is enough before I attempt to unistall Nod.
That would be all I did before reinstall, I wouldn't have physically removed it .

1283631 2012-06-24 07:51:00 Your license hasn't run out?? paulw (1826)
1283632 2012-06-24 08:09:00 The Nod32 Antivirus ( NOT Smart Security) was working perfectly before it was brought back, ( 2 weeks ago) I know because I updated the same day before returning and it ran a auto update when started as it was set to.

I have checked the licence codes just now ( sunday night 7.05pm) and they are accepting From Eset as they should, doesn't expire till October.

Something has changed since it was returned and I left .

1283633 2012-06-24 10:41:00 I can only go by what it says in Scheduler, which I only looked at today after icon turned red from orange

All boxes ticked for below
Log maintenance last run 24/6
Regular automatic update last run 24/6
System Scan last run 22/6
Automatic update Last run 8/6

Below not ticked
Automatic update after user logon no run date
Automatic startup file check (user logon) last run 7/6
Automatic startup file check (virus sig database) no run date

When I select home "Maximum protection is not ensured"
Virus database not been updated for some time

I haven't downloaded any updates for anything.
The icon is going round now and the update bar says "update progress 0%"
it just stays like that then stops.

I am thinking cause Defender is also antivirus so 2 antivirus it clashed ith it, and even though I have just tirned it off to day computer may require restarting to fix it, which I'll try tomorrow. Anyone else found this with defender?

1283634 2012-06-24 21:17:00 Heres how it was set, which is the way I do it as standard .

Auto check for updates on startup - then every 1 hour
Regular update checks every 1 hour
Full System Scan was Set to Fridays 6pm

The Nod32 was installed, and does an auto update when this happens, When its first installed it asks for a reboot which was done, it also does a auto full system scan on reboot the first time .

I ran a manual update as well before returning and there was nothing to download, I also ran a manual full system scan after putting back data, all clean .
When returned it did an auto update as its meant to on startup as I opened the Nod windows and watched it .

The options mentioned not ticked are correct, if these are ticked it will greatly increase the startup time of the computer .

If you remember you wanted to install all the other programs you have yourself to save me some time and you Money, one of these may have caused a problem, or maybe some settings were changed after I left . Windows defender normally doesn't affect Nod32 .

1283635 2012-06-25 03:25:00 Hi Wainuitech, thanks for explanation might help me to narrow problem down. Have discovered I can’t go on what scheduler says as “run” doesn’t mean successfully run. Have now looked at some other things.
The problem looks like it occurred early hours of the 11/6 and nothing else has run since, though virus signature update has tried. Originally when icon went to orange I thought it may have been due to computer being in sleep mode and that it would fix itself when it ran again.

The log says under events
8/10/2012 to 10/6/2012 Eset Kernel Virus signature database successfully updated
11/6/2012 2.15am Eset Kernel Virus signature database successfully updated
11/6/2012 7.14 am Update module Error downloading file from update server
11/6/2012 9.18 am Update module Error downloading file from update server
11/6/2012 11.19 am Update module Undocumented serious error (0x101a)
11/6/2012 1.20 pm Update module Update information is not consistent
11/6/2012 4.31pm Update module An error occurred while downloading update files.
And it continues with the above msg up to this morning at 5.40am

I‘ve though hard and the only program I’ve installed since reinstall was printer (from disk) on 13/6 after the problem occurred.

I’ve googled the error (0 x101a) and found this thread
www.wilderssecurity.com and
kb.eset.cz

So after closing all tabs down I’ll reboot and try to run it manually, I won’t be uninstalling and reinstalling
as yet. Rebooting seems to fix soo many things, washing machine, cell ph, heres hoping it will fix this.

BUT
As I closed tabs comp got slower. Opened task manager and resource monitor saw physical memory at 86% and climbing as I closed tabs (only 15 open). Also saw under memory, resource monitor “ekrn.exe” the biggest user at 1,971,320 kb (Commit) and it hasn’t changed for hours.

Found this thread dated 15/6/2012
www.wilderssecurity.com Where some people have a problem with it failing to update and CPU use really high and climbing. Someone had up to ekrn.exe is now 1905,156K,. They’re talking about memory leakage, don’t know what they mean.
Quote “ESET support called me this morning - they have the process dump, the sys-inspector log and have confirmed that there is an issue they are aware of that the Dev team are working on - a fix is expected in the next build - whenever that is...”Quote

But again looks as if i can fix it with a reboot, so I’ll keep closing tabs.

1283636 2012-06-25 03:58:00 looks like the problem occurred 3 days after it was returned, 11/6/2012 after 2.15am but before 7.14 am

One problem could be over stressing the PC, having 15tabs open on that PC with the amount of power it doesn't have & Vista could have caused some sort of corruption (1 possible cause) Another is if modules are upgraded which they do every so often the PC sometimes needs to be restarted, leaving it running 24/7 doesn't allow this to happen.

1283637 2012-06-25 04:51:00 looks like the problem occurred 3 days after it was returned, 11/6/2012 after 2.15am but before 7.14 am .
Yes I can see that.
Did you read the link about the recent occurances of high CPU usage for ekrn.exe, mine is still 1,971,320 kb. So that would of stressed the PC ?.
For me 15 tabs open is not a lot. Its only been the last 6 mths or so starting to see more physical memory usage and only have 1/4 the amounts of tabs I use to have open.

How often should I restart my PC obviously if I have to with updates but is there a common practice, like once a week?. I have only been restarting if I had to with the updates. Currently I haven't restarted since I got it back on 8th.
