2012-02-27 03:44:00 | So it seems that the government are going to do something about all of the people on benefits. Or will they? Every time the issue comes, up loads of people moan and complain and John decides not to do anything. Where are the jobs for all these people on benefits? They could go into the orchards and work instead of bringing people from overseas to do the job that NZers could be doing. www.stuff.co.nz

2012-02-27 03:56:00 | Gets 'discussed' every other year for the past 20+ years Nothing real ever happens. Time for a Govt to make some unpopular descisions ? Forced work if unemployed for more than a year ?? PEP schemes, remember them.

2012-02-27 06:20:00 | What a great joke. Once again Key is short sighted. For this to even work, there needs to be Jobs to begin with. The fool is you, actually. Have you even BEEN in to see WINZ? They have STACKS of jobs, but right now people are afforded the right to decline them. Well it's time people suck it up and just go do something they might not particularly 100% enjoy! I went in there, about 2 years ago before my previous job. Could have been a baker, a brick layer, and so much more. All with on the job training... But right now if you don't wanna get up at 4AM and be a baker, you're not forced to. Time for that to change. If you want a free handout, time to take the jobs they have on offer just so you put food on your own table, and not be picky about your free handouts.

True, jobs might be harder to come now but come later when the economy picks up, that select group of people may have less of an excuse. Even for the time being, being more active to look for a job is better than to just sit and do nothing. I like that payment card. I haven't read much about it .. for the younger lot who isn't in training or jobs. Is it ok for a 17yr old to look for a job on the dole for I dunno up to a year or more .... and keep going at it but choose not to go into training. |

2012-02-27 06:47:00 | Problem for me is with my wrecked shoulder pretty much all the jobs at Winz are now beyond me, although I'm not on a benifit I am looking for a job and if I can't find anything soon I might have to apply for one. As for the orchards all the ones down here in Nelson were fully staffed even before the Uni's finished last year as the bad weather made the harvest smaller so they needed less staff and this year as far as I can tell they haven't brought any overseas workers in. So even if I could do Orchard work there isn't any

2012-02-27 07:07:00 | The fool is you, actually . Have you even BEEN in to see WINZ? They have STACKS of jobs Anecdote is not the way to prove anything - use statistics . Statistics show that job shortage is a worldwide problem . What's worse, economic theory doesn't require that anybody be employed . It just requires that demand and supply be in balance, where 'demand' means people with money, and supply means a few workers operating machines . If a person doesn't have money, their demand doesn't count . They're outside the system and are supposed to become invisible, preferably die . . . Don't bash beneficiaries until you've studied a bit of economics and seen where employment enters into economic theory . (It doesn't) (And yes, I have been to WINZ . I was there earlier this month applying for a benefit
