| 1261414 | 2012-02-25 22:58:00 | This old chesnut again, This has come up a few times. I looked into it a few years back and the cost of healh care for smoking related illness was signifiantly less then what teh government took as taxes, Then Billy t looked into it and his documents said the opposite. Now, The media is again reporting that the government is making a killing on tobacco. www.nzherald.co.nz It just makes good finincial sense to tax the **** out of a guaranteed revenue stream that then kills off the person before retirment. |

As Turia says it takes time for smokers to quit, with markups, then perhaps Govt can further demonstrate/educate, e.g. to youth, any health risks. | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||

| 1261421 | 2012-02-26 01:03:00 | I'll give up smoking when ASH contribute 1.1 billion to the Government. Otherwise I'll continue paying my tax. We can't have the Government running short of funds!! |

Know the tax is about right when you only see about 1 a week smoking. You aren't very bright because when the price gets too high it only makes it more profitable for the black-market guys and so the Govt. will end up with less tax but still have the problem of people smoking. In fact I am surprised there is not more on the black-market now as the stuff almost grows like a weed. I had one plant last year and have had seedlings pop up all over the place this year. They haven't manged to stop people smoking marijuana yet. |
