1261804 2012-02-28 23:27:00 What simply amazes me is that people would stoop as low as to actually collect a benefit. I except intellectually and very very severely disabled people who we should look after. Although the peoples family should be paying as well if they can.
People are pretty quick to hop in the sack and make like rabbits but slow to take responsibility of the offspring.

1261805 2012-02-28 23:28:00 Aside from the fact there's 339 jobs right there available for the picking, some require experience, some don't. On top of that, if you factor in that there's over 10,000 roles available right now on TradeMe, there's a *ton* of jobs available.

Yes, and both TM and WINZ, a lot are part time. Not terribly useful except for those solo mums perhaps.
How come on the news this morning those graduates couldn't get work? Actually the guy seemed a bit arrogant to me.....but her - she was some kind of therapist grad.....not exactly unskilled labour.....

Actually this one annoys me:

In an interview with the New Zealand Herald in 2008, Ms Bennett said she worked two part-time jobs each day but was driven back on to the benefit. "I pretty much fell apart because I was exhausted. I went back on the DPB," she said.

The poor thing....

If she can't handle working two jobs, then what is she doing in parliament?

1261807 2012-02-28 23:42:00 So you're saying rather than even working part time to bring in a little money on your own, it's better to just not work at all, abscond from responsibility and expect the government to pay for you?

I haven't seen the news, I have no idea, but I do know that bedside manner goes a long way. I was out of a job for all of 6 hours before I had sealed a new position. 4 weeks down the track and I'm still getting calls back from varying recruitment agencies with positions I've been accepted for a final interview for.

I have basically zero useful qualifications.

Some of the jobs I applied for were for almost minimum wage, others were for ~$90K. I settled for middle of the road, but it didn't matter how big or small the job was, permanent, part time, contract or temporary, I applied for it!

Cruisey job, underlings do all the hard work and they have long breaks away from parliament.
Dont get me wrong I think she is cool laughed when I saw her leopard print Nissan Escargo car driving around here pre election. She was gracious in defeat when she thought she had lost out to the sour puss commie candidate.

1261810 2012-02-29 00:19:00 I think this sums it up nicely:

12:22 Comment From Audrey
Is Ms Bennett at all aware that 'being available for work', under our welfare system, constitutes constant labour and busy work that demeans and demotivates and dehumanises beneficiaries? Does the minister truly believe this system works, and does she really believe it is a fair way to treat people? - From a sickness beneficiary

12:23 Paula Bennett: Hi Audrey. I once washed dishes in a rest home, didn’t love it, but was proud of myself all the same. think about how demeaning your comments are to the thousands of people who do those jobs, they get my full respect
I think that sums things up quite well. There's obviously a difference between a sickness beneficiary and an unemployment beneficiary. You might not like the job, but you take it anyway to put food on the table, to provide for yourself (And your family) and take some responsibility for your own life.

1261811 2012-02-29 00:21:00 The fool is you, actually. Have you even BEEN in to see WINZ? They have STACKS of jobs, but right now people are afforded the right to decline them. Well it's time people suck it up and just go do something they might not particularly 100% enjoy!

I went in there, about 2 years ago before my previous job. Could have been a baker, a brick layer, and so much more. All with on the job training... But right now if you don't wanna get up at 4AM and be a baker, you're not forced to. Time for that to change. If you want a free handout, time to take the jobs they have on offer just so you put food on your own table, and not be picky about your free handouts.

Been there done that.

WINZ are not employers - they are recruitment agents. The problem is that most employers (whether they advertise through WINZ or not) won't even consider you, if you appear to be "overqualified" for the job they are advertising (not that I'm saying that everybody on the dole - or who needs the dole - is overqualified, but there are more and more people with good qualifications looking for work).

Employers don't want to hire an experienced logistics manager (for instance) for a baker's role and train them up, just to have them leave when something comes up that is more in the new employee's 'normal' line of work.

Hell, when I was unemployed about three years ago and decided to apply for permanent roles, having been a contractor for the previous ten years, recruiters' feedback from employers was that I was a 'flight risk' when the economy picked up!!! It didn't seem to occur to them to look at my track record - most of the contracts I had done were around a couple of years in length, which is about what you can expect these days from a permie anyway!!

No. If you can find a job that gives you a bit more money then take it. While doing that you look for something else better.
