Apples and pears. You still get paid a premium because of the slight uncertainty of the work so it is similar and as I said those workers probably need budgeting advice. |

Well it certainly used to be and most of the big union men were failed pomy and scotish union people. While it has certainly improved there are still certain industries which are still living in the dark ages. |

Prefect, don't stop there. Why don't you start rounding them up and "dispatch them down the river". How dare these ungrateful buggers join together and stand up for their rights aye. |

I generally support a worker(s) right to strike as a measure of last resort when negotiations fail. To me, this is a important right in labour law. As a long time shift worker myself, coming in to work on nights, weekends, stat days etc, all year - every year, I believe the higher remuneration for this is well earned. As far as the minimum 8hrs bit goes, I sure no one here would want to go to work every day wondering if they would be lucky and get a full days work that day cause they have bills to pay next week. I also recognize that as a business, it has to make a profit. But it shouldn't be at the expense of its employees, its greatest asset. The traditional NZ media are hopeless for getting a balanced story, so I take what they say with a grain of salt. But having been involved myself in industrial action before, I can it is something that is NOT taken lightly and is used only when all other avenues have failed. Please don't forget that a lot of the workers rights we have now are the result of unions fighting for us many years ago. I may not be very popular after this post, but this tread appeared to be only showing one side of the fence. Ny in theory you are 100% correct however in practice you are definitely not. The POA workers have not had a secret ballot only a show of hands. It is a very brave man to not put his hand up when told to. The Union leaders are working in their own interests not those of their members. Have a look at their redundancy agreement the senior Union guys get around $8-900k if made redundant and in this case that looks like their objective. The workers just end up out of a job. In general a "Union" is good at looking after an individual member who has been mistreated and does not have the gumption/intelligence to sort things out for themselves. All to often however they stir up an issue for the soul reason of wishing to appear to be doing something thus keeping the members fees rolling in. The Union bosses get paid while the on strike workers do not. |

| 1261029 | 2012-02-25 03:44:00 | I am going to call BS on that . I have seen it too often where the unions have not been working in the workers interests . There was a case in Auckland where the workers of this factory wanted to swap the Friday night shift for Sunday so they could have a bit of fun but the union came along and told management that they had to pay them Sunday rates . Well the workers had to go back to the Friday night shift even though they were happy with the previous arrangement . The freezing works industry used to be plagued by strikes until the workers started to run out of money and the strikes only lasted as long as they did because the workers were paid so well . As well as that the strikes always happened at the most damaging time for the industry just when the lamb kill for the UK Christmas market was starting . There is a guy that I knew with a factory where the union guy came in and told him he either had to build a new smoko room or get rid of some workers . The workers were happy with the arrangement they had so the next time the union guy came in he gathered the workers together and asked the guy which workers he had to sack . He took off and nothing was ever done about it . Reminds me of a little incident back in the 60s, when as you say the Unions struck for any reason at all . Back then, a mates brother was manager of a freezing works that was plagued with problems On this occasion the Wharfies in Ak were on strike yet again and all the Coolstores were becoming full . So, it looked like the Works would have to stop the kill . This was going to cost the Works a fortune in wages, as well as lost income so he had a brainwave . He announced that he was going to stop the Gumboot Allowance forthwith . He dreamt up a heap of excuses and the militant union went out on strike . Well the battle went on for a couple of weeks by which time the AK Wharfies had gone back to work . Once they had cleared the backlog on the wharfs and some of the Coolstores were emptied, he capitulated and gave his guys back their Gumboot Allowance . The Moron Union Leaders thought they had had another major victory and those still alive probably still dont realise they were sucked in . :D |
