1284872 2012-07-01 10:46:00 It is not there yet but Libre Office is working on an import for Publisher files. Not sure when that will happen though. mikebartnz (21)
1284873 2012-07-01 11:35:00 If you purchased a new comp is it running Win7? I doubt Pub 97 is compatible with Win 7.

If you are running XP I can help you but you still seriously need to consider getting out of your dependance on a very old left behind program.

I do see, however, what a pain it would be to convert 1000 files and checking them for correctness!

1284874 2012-07-01 12:09:00 For future-proofing a copy of Publisher 97 and Windows 98 running in a virtual machine of your choice would probably work well.

No need to convert the files and no need to try running the old software on Windows 7 and above, but you still have access to them if you need them.

1284875 2012-07-01 23:14:00 I have Office 2010 ... if I go to save a file it will only go back as far as '98 in save options. Having said that, I've never tried to open a '97 or earlier file in 2010.

Probably the easiest way to find out is to send the file to someone with 2010 and see if they can open it OK.

1284878 2012-07-02 00:20:00 Thanks for all the advice to date -- most a bit beyond my expertise though sorry . My new computer runs XP , not Windows 7 , and the old one did too . As far as updating Pub97 , I had the original disc and originally ran the program on a Windows 98 machine , then bought a laptop ( XP ) approx 2003 and ran it on that and updated my desktop to a new machine around 2005 that ran XP , had hundreds of files so just kept using Pub 97 as I know it well , had lots of files etc , plus could swap them ( USB drive ) between computers . To me , it's a bit like an old vehicle -- I have one company vehicle that is 20 years old , still tidy , done 540,000kms , does 20-30,000kms a year , costs around $1000 a year maintanence . I bought a new vehicle 2 years ago for $46,000 , has done 60,000kms and worth around $20k , and also costs around $1000 a year in maintanence ! pottsy99 (14776)

I'm using office 2010, do you want to email me a copy of one of the files and I'll see if it will open?

If I remember correctly Publisher actually wasn't part of the Office programs but was an addon.

1284881 2012-07-02 01:02:00 Could this (www.pdfonline.com)do it? I can't remember if it will covert .pub files,but its worth a go. Nick G (16709)
