27024 2001-12-08 23:40:00 I use a Firewall that causes other than specified programmes to request permission to access the Internet.
When I use Gozilla, for instance, it will often ask if I will allow it to act as a Server.
Does it have any effect if I say No?
Why does this, and other programmes, wish to?

Thanks and Regards,

27025 2001-12-09 06:51:00 some programs do run as servers and require server rights to function properly...eg icq

gozilla..i'm not to sure on as it has spyware which may require server rights. i would suggest an alternative downloader such flashget/jetcar and use adaware to remove the spyware.

if a program askes for server rights, say no and see if it still works.....if it stops working then ok the server rights.

27026 2001-12-10 02:55:00 'pseudo server' or 'proxy server'?

If the *firewall* is asking if you want it to act as a *proxy server*, tell it yes. It will give you some more protection. Maybe not much, but some. It might stop you doing some things, but that would be configurable, once you find out what they are.

27027 2001-12-10 10:59:00 Thanks Graham,
I thought I was being original using the phrase psuedo server.
No, it is not the Firewall requesting permission but one of the programmes.
The only one I recall off the top of my head, but I know I have others, is Gozilla which asks if IPC Server may access the Internet.
I say no to that and still can download but others I don't know what the effect is. Or why any of them want to.
